Can anyone explain how to encode a MIDI so that when playing back on the SD1 a track will play a specific harmony line through the Vocalist?

Thanks,
Glenn

Hey!
Usually I'm using ch 15 for vocalist.I activate it and give all the settings necesary via sysex. It's also posibil to dedicate any track or midi chanel for vocalist by GM editor. Then I'm recording what I need for haveing a good vocalist back voices, right intervals and octaves.I'm using an external sequencer on a laptop and the PC interface from SD1+.I also did vocalist tracks with the internal sequencer, but I prefer an external one 'cause it's easier to control everything.
Using a specific track and midi chanel for vocalist will make you loose one chanel,so you'll have only 15 chanels for instruments...but that's more than enough...
Hope helps, Vio

Sysex is a big mystery to me. All I know is that it's a string of numbers entered in the event list for a specific track. Can you tell me exactly how to do it? How do you know what sysex numbers to enter? Must they be entered in ch 15? I also use a PC sequencer (PowerTracks) and then transfer to the SD1.

Thanks,
Glenn

Hey!
All the sysex messages are in the SD1 tehnical book. Also I recommend a really good software "Sd1 Mastering Studio" from http://www.soundcompany.net/sd1/mastering_studio/
that makes everything easy.
Also ...a simple way to have a dedicate track and channel for vocalizer (is not necesary to be channel midi 15...I'm using this one 'cause I get used with it...it can be anyone..except 10)
So a easy way to do it is to...
1.Load a midifile
2.Go to F1 GM Part
3.Let the midi play for a couple of beats.
4.Stop it with "Pause"
5.Go to an empty track..check the display for it (no midi activity )
6.With F8 Part Mode..push till you'll have "Vocalize"
8.Save the file with the new settings using SAVE/ENTER
Now you have a track dedicated to vocalizer.
Next step...record on it what you need...in SD1 seq or external one.
Check the manual page 106 and 84
If you like you can include next "F0 26 7B 33 00 0E 01 F7 " in the midifile..that let SD1 know that Midi Channel 15 is Vocalizer dedicated.Than record waht you need. Also check for the Vocalizer to be Active (red LED on)
Hope it helps...
Vio

Glenn, it is less complicated than you think,.
If you want the vocoder mode to follow what you sequence..Just pick a track usually not used[I use 16]..record the lines or chords you want the vocoder to play with your vocal voice..If you are using a existing sequence you will add this new data to it...You also can assign the vocoder to any existing track in the SMF..Don't forget to match the vocoder channel to the track channel..

PS: don't forget to turn the volume of the instrument down on that track[16]..Don't mute it though..you will terminate the data transfer.

Fran, are you saying you can do this WITHOUT including a sysex message?

This is the way you activate the vocalist
1 activation : F0 26 7B 36 00 7F F7
2 assign to Ch 15: F0 26 7B 33 00 0E 01 F7
3 select vocalist set 14
(MIDITRACK): F7 F0 26 7B 37 00 0D F7
have fun

if you wish another chanel
just change the
F0 26 7B 33 00 00 01 F7 (track 1)
F0 26 7B 33 00 01 01 F7 (track 2)
.....
...
F0 26 7B 33 00 0F 01 F7 (track 16)
