I have made the file size for file attachments 5MB so you can now attach MP3s or any other files under that size to a posting. NOTE: It only supports the following files types .gif,.jpg,.txt,.zip,.png,.mp3

OK just worked out how to do this. Just note though you have a limit of 2 files per posting. You click on the File Manager link at the bottom of the reply form, then Browse to the file on your computer and click Add File. It will then take a little while to upload. There is a progress bar while it uploads and then finally the file name will appear at the top of the dialog box. Then click on "Done Adding Files" and that is it. This means you no longer have to find a free file host to put your files you want here on the forum.

The other advantage is that unlike free file hosting services the files won't expire here and will remain indefinately.

I find this not only a nice (thanks Nigel wink ), but a very important added feature as well, because for the first time, our uploaded pics, along with its associated posting, will be archived & preserved together in the Synthzone database. cool

Up until now, all pic links included in a Synthzone thread posting, of which was subsequently removed from the original hosting server, no longer appears frown when viewed on Synthzone.

I know some people questioned updating the forum software. And I myself had shyed away from it for many many years worried that we may lose something from our past. Now I think everyone can see it has been a major improvement in all areas. Plus by staying with a UBB product nothing at all was lost in the transition.

Uploading files is one of the many great features avaialble on the new Forum

I, for one, have already used the file share to upload a few Technic Style files, and found many members, particularly the not so computer savvy, prefer this new downloading method.

Many were confused by 4share, yousendit, etc. so this is a blessing to many.

Thanks for the new forum...I LOVE IT!

After you browse to the file and then click "Add File" it does take a little while to upload ( you will see a blue progress bar at the bottom ). Until the the name then appears at the top of the file manager box it hasn't finished uploading ( and I am not talking about the file name at the bottom that came up when you browsed ). Then you can click "Done".

Because if you don't wait and keep trying to do it over and over again it thinks you are trying to upload multiple files and you start getting those error messages. Depending on the file size it may take a couple of minutes to upload.

The main thing will be to be very careful about uploading any copyrighted material here, as the LAST thing we all want is for Nigel to get in trouble having illicit material on the site. It is far too precious a resource to put in harm's way like this.

I still think that, if you want to share sheet music, or factory styles or commercial SMF's, we should do it privately. We never had problems in the past because we COULDN'T post copyrighted material. Now we can.

Be careful, guys...

How do YOU feel about the issue, Nigel?

Diki, you said it exactly like it is. Thanks so very much for pointing that out to everyone. If anyone uploaded copyright material I would definately have to take this ability to upload away again and I would hate to do that because I think it is a great new feature. So like Diki said PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think about the legality of what you upload.

Might need a 'sticky' on this point, Nigel. Top of the page, all caps!

You can probably remember several threads I have been involved in in the past where many members don't believe ANY copyright attaches to anything that THEY feel should be free!

I've yet to see a forum where MP3's had to be zipped first, though... Are you SURE the software can't handle it, or is this just for uploading and the forum software unzips it at your end?

Yep, uploading Premium Styles from Yamaha, or styles from Midi Spot...also SMF from these companies and others...all are copyrighted...all can create problems.

Best to send these things via private email.

That's how other forums do it.

You are right Diki. It was just a setting that I needed to dig up and change. I will try an MP3 of a song I recorded with Colin Haye from Men At Work and Guy McDonough from Australian Crawl years ago to see if it is working ( Written by Guy and myself ) . And it looks like it is.

While we are at it, is there a setting that, when you quote somebody, you ONLY quote what they wrote, and not all the other quotes from that post? It's how the old forum did it, and avoids a bunch of 'nested' quotes...

Although it doesn't really take much effort to simply delete extraneous quotes either :), as long as one is reading and confirming what they are quoting.

Sorry the forum software doesn't support turning that off. I thought it did but when limiting the number of nested quotes it simply threw an error when you try to post with nested quotes that exceeded that limit ... which is pretty annoying to force people to have to edit them out. Some people just don't quite understand the quote tags so that would simply stop them from being able to post. Like Dennis said if you do understand the nesting of the tags you can just edit them out yourself. Sure it's a pity it's not automatically done for you but there is not much I can do about that. Maybe that will come in future updates of the software. I will submit it as a requested feature on the UBB Threads website.

Nigel...
Is it possible to set the software to recognize .doc and .docx formats?

It would not open Hammer's post about "drug problems" which was .docx. I posted a work-around...but it seems it should be easier.

In any event...thanks for all your work on the new format. The new features are a welcome treat.

Eddie

No problem, Nigel. Of course, I'm already familiar with doing this, but from so many nested quotes that I'm pretty sure the poster didn't REALLY want to do anything but quote the top level, it's obvious many either don't, or it's too much bother.

Hopefully, UBB can provide a solution.

Another point might be, is there a selection of emoticon sets? Compared to the previous set, I find these a lot more cryptic and hard to quickly figure out which they are..

Oh, and one more point... is there a way to kern the line start so it doesn't basically touch the boundary of the post? It's a minor detail, but helps a bit with legibility, especially on some of the display schemes.

Niggly details, I know, but once fixed, you never have to deal with them again!

Great job with the migration, Nigel and Scott. One of the smoothest transitions I've been through. We lost the entire site at G70Usersclub when it changed to Rolandarranger.com. Had to put it up as a somewhat incomplete archive... Continuity is more important than many think...

Diki, there are great emoticons here: http://smileys.on-my-web.com/

Just click on the smiley you want, and copy the BBCode in your post where you want the smiley.

Lots to choose from.

That takes too long for me... I'm used to the standard typing for many of the main ones (rolleyes, etc.!), it's just that they don't present very well, IMO.

Just trying to help, bud...it's easy for me to keep another browser window open with the Smileys Repository easily accessed.

Of course, I'm not in a hurry either...Ha ha...

Having said that, my Tyros4 was held up due to severe storm/snow squalls...ah well, it should be here on Monday, having been sent out by Purolator courier (ground) on the 25th.

Still, it would have been nice to have it over the weekend.

Have you managed to play one yet?

No there no control over the text formatting of a post. But in regard to smileys I have been adding new ones. Just click on the smiley above the reply box and you can see what I have already added. And I will continue to add new ones over time. While this software isn't perfect in terms of control, as you say the transition went pretty well considering we got to import the old forum and member records completely with only a couple of hiccups that I managed to get around. And now I think I will continue to update as UBB bring out new versions of the software so some of your wishes may get dealt with in the future.

Now lets dance !!!

Nigel,

Curious, do you, or anyone, other than the intended message receiver and sender have access to private messgages that are sent to that individual(s) in My Stuff/messages? I would think not, but wanted to be sure we didn't have 'Big Brother' watching...

Thanks
