Very little of the above...

But I always read the manual from cover to cover

I guess that makes me über-geek...

I don't think any of those substitute to being Geeky, it's just a sign of the times.

It's night time here now so to relax I can either sit at my PC and communicate with the world, voice my opinion and debate with others from every nationality just like you fine people here.

Or.... what, sit down and watch mindless TV just like the “non-geek” people do ?

TV kills braincells, and the so called “Normal People” will never understand.

James

How many of you have been behind an erratic vehicle whose driver is probably tuned into one of the above while piloting his 4,000 pounds of metal?

Cell phones were just the tip of the iceberg!

with that train of thought you might as well take all Radios, CD/DVD players, GPS units, etc, etc, out of vehicles also as major distractions.

Seems to me that a guy almost has to be a geek to play keyboards now. In the 'good old days' it was just sit there and play. Imagine that.

Say it loud, I'm a Luddite and proud.

No I agree with Lucky that handheld cell phones were a major hazard. Thank goodness many states including California where I live have made using hand held cell phones illegal while driving. So many times I have sat behind vehicles weaving around and not noticing any traffic around them and seen them with a hand held cellphone pushed to the side of their head.

No Joke. Coming back from NC this weekend a guy passed me doing at least 75, steering with his forearms and texting. Too scary for words.

Distractions come in many many forms....just look around you in your daily life, study different peoples actions when you out and about town, etc.....see any weird stuff, now add in every person who goes to a club or bar, restaurant drinking all night, or maybe a innocent bottle of wine at dinner.....of course you do.....now put them behind a wheel...cell phones is a very small part of distractions while driving....its a crap shoot every time you drive your vehicle...dont worry about yourself .....worry about what the OTHER GUY IS DOING......be a defensive driver!

Actually, Donny, the AAA has estimated that operating a car while using a cell phone, and even MORE, while texting, is the EXACT equivalent of being legally drunk. So, don't just worry about the other guy... Worry about yourself if you take that call en route.

I know innumerable drunk drivers that excuse themselves by going 'It's the OTHER guy you have to worry about". But we all know better, don't we...?

I'm afraid this sounds very much like an apologia from someone that does 'take the call' in his car. But somehow, it's the OTHER drivers we should worry about. Not every drunk driver has an accident every time they drink, either. But we don't accept the 'It's the other guy who's really dangerous' as their excuse, and we shouldn't from the cellphone user or texter, either.

Perhaps we should... and with your line of thinking, we should not be holding a conversation with a passenger either (and I HAVE seen some violent conversations in a vehicle that HAD to be a distraction to the driver!!!) BUT I can LISTEN to a radio, or LISTEN to a CD, or LISTEN to the GPS while still maintaining attention to driving ... can you do that while DIALING a cell phone, or TEXTING a message? ... yes, they are all there to be used, but at the proper time ...

We are doomed by those who think they can dial a cell phone or text a friend while doing 15 - 20 miles per hour over the speed limit ... I say the fines aren't enough ... take away the phone AND their driver's license ...

They might as well close every bar in America also because there ain't enough jails to hold all the people who drink and drive every day of the week also there isn't enough law enforcement either.....it's a no win situation driving & phones, drinking, drugs, etc, ........protect yourself.

Don't mean to stray any further from Eddie's topic, but I had to mention this. I live in an extremely, EXTREMELY congested area where I notice more and more accidents happening daily. And, a lot of "head-ons." I don't doubt it's from any or all of the above. I've been considering getting a motorcycle helmet to wear when I have to ride the highways. The only reason I haven't done it so far is because it would block my view of seeing anyone too close to me on either side of my car. All this attention to the road wears me getting to the gig...I'm finding I'm not relaxed as I should be when I get there!

I can still remember clearly the days when all I needed was to place my keyboard, amp, and rhythm in the trunk of my car and take a leisurely drive to the job. The times "they are a-changin."

Now answer Eddie's question!!! And thanks to him for listing all those. It made me realize the list of "distractions" that have cropped up for people since cellphones first came on the scene.
