I'd like to hear the thought processes people use when selecting intro or endings for various style driven songs.

I find that more often than not, the canned 2nd and 3rd variations don't "fit" the tunes so well. I prefer often to use the 1st variation, essentially just a count off and set the tune up the way I want to...

The more involved intro seem to pertain to a very specific song that isn't what we're actually playing...

Thoughts?

Hi Bill,

I rarely use a canned intro, unless I am doing a song that relates to it in someway.

Same goes for the endings.

Most times I re-assemble the intros so that I can play chords over them...this involves taking specific parts from the main variations, or even from other styles.

That way, I can play my own intro.

Roland has a similar idea already set up on the second intro, I believe...not sure about Korg.

Same here.

Some of the intros and endings are so distinctive that I would not want to use the same one(s) more than once in a performance. So, I generally play my own.

Much of this will depend upon the song, and the associated style. There are thousands of outstanding style files available that have intros and endings that were created specificially for a particular song.

Of course, you have other options, such as playing the intro and ending yourself, or creating the intro and ending using your T2's onboard Style Creator program. There's really nothing to it, and when you're finished you have a custom style for that particular song.

Roland arrangers have a great way to handle intros and endings...All variation 2 intros and endings , are designed for the player to use chord progressions while the intro/ending are playing..Gives it a players touch ..instead of the totally canned intro/endings..

I will often just play my own intro, either using the style/rhythm for the song or playing in piano mode with no rhythm ...

I prefer the countoff myself. Then I can intro the song either strongly or gently at my choice. Some nights, they are already on the dancefloor, sometimes you have to get them out of their seats...

But I am STILL waiting for arranger manufacturers to provide some sort of chord readout on pre-canned Intros and Endings. With a style library in the hundreds, if not thousands, how is anyone supposed to remember exactly how the pre-canned chord changes go? And I refuse to use the canned In/Ends with a solo on top... might as well put on a chicken hat and walk around in the crowd while it plays!

Come to think of it, those pre-canned Intros are the dead giveaway of the weaker player... You hear four or eight bars of something with style, panache and great emulative technique, then the REAL player comes in... and your jaw drops!

What happened? Where'd he go? You know, the one that COULD play?

If the Intros are the strongest point in the song, it's time to just use the count-in...

Hi Bill,
I asked a similar sort of question recently.
I was putting together some user styles to share, and was wondering if I should put chord progressions in the intro's ( trying to make them sound a bit flashier) or create them so that users could play their own.
Majority feedback was to let users play their own progressions for the intro's.

I luv listening to the precanned intro's and endings, (they used to fool me into upgrading my keyboards, get it home and you realize the styles themselves haven't really changed, just some new intro/endings). In reality they're not always useful. After all how many songs can you use the same precanned intro for? Quite often they don't really suit the song you want to play.
Fortunately with my PA800, the type of intro you use isn't set. Default is Intro1, flashy , precanned with chord progression.
Intro 2, play your own chord progression.
Intro 3 , Count in.
I usually keep intro 2 & 3 intact, but if I can find a song specific midifile, for the song I want to play, I replace Intro 1 with the midifile intro & save as user style.

Endings if they ramble on forever, I cut out some of the first few bars to shorten it, or again use midifile if possible.

best wishes
Rikki

Luv it Diki,
I can relate to that.
Hubby thought I had a musician hidden away in the cupboard.
He popped out & played the intro's, I played the rest.
