Arranger play (PA800). I played chords and did the sax and trumpet voices.

And you think this is better than a Berklee grad?

On this one, I might have looked for a style that didn't 'scoop' through the changes so much... there are some scoops that go against the chords (by the time the scoop resolves, the chord has gone, and you don't get to hear what it is).

It's not that I'm trying to 'bash' you, zuki, but when you definitively state (on the other thread) that your PA800 sounds better than any Berklee grad you've played with, but then you post this, I just can't help myself I'm sorry...

Perhaps a small reminder of how high the bar IS before we make claims of mechanical superiority is needed?

I tried to play it but everything is badly distorted. Sounds out of tune even. I checked other songs on my PC to be sure that wasn't it. Must be a problem with the upload or the player on Box net.

Sounded fine to me...I downloaded to desk top.

I agree that the style is a little too scoopy, almost a little too busy, as the melody sometimes get lost with all the activity behind it.

I have several styles like that on my S900, and I had to re-assemble them to play "straighter".

Sometimes it takes me quite awhile to get a style I'm happy with and one that lets the chord changes stand out a little better....no use using all those 7b9s and 13ths if they can't be appreciated by the listener.

Otherwise, the playing is fine, as is the chording, and nice use of the intro as an interlude/turnaround...the PA-800 has a lovely sound...very natural, and the levels were spot on.

Zuki, are you making a web site to showcase your music? I thought you already had one on the go?

Ian

OK, I'll keep the next one simple Thanks for your replies. Constructive critique will make it only better.

Had no problem streaming it ... using Mozilla ...
I understand the comments about the style being busy, but isn't that how some big bands might play a tune (the Duke's great rendition aside ), i.e., the band is blowing some riffs while a horn is taking a solo?
Not looking to be argumentative here, just askin'
t.
PS ... I also confess to not having the training or the naturally good ear some of you have, but can someone be more specific about where the 'scooping' occurs?
thnx,
t.

This was really really good Zuki. The horn solo was very convincing. I loved the sound and the overal balance. This is how an arranger is supposed to sound.

Keep it up Sir !!

Jim-Nice to hear some of your work...That kb sounds pretty awesome...

I too found a disconnect with the style for Satin Doll. At times I found the style too conflicting with the essence of the actual tune, so much to the point that it hindered the natural swing feel. During the B section, at times it seemed like the beat got inverted for a half a bar or something.

I'd like to hear you redo the tune with a more straight-forward style...

Still, great to hear some of your stuff-keep it coming!

Adding to what Bill had to say, and as a Korgie myself (Pa1XPro), sometimes less is more. And, in my book, that goes for all brands of arrangers. Obviously, it's not a golden rule, but it's worth bearing in mind. The 800 sure is a nice board.

The style is what I would say is what is a negative for Korg styles - too genre specific . In this cas I felt it took away from the song; the scooping was just too much for me. Having only owned an iX300, this is one of the reasons why I moved on. The styles I needed were few and the others were somewhat overwhelming - as this was.

The trumpet sounded much more realistic at the end than when you first brought it in. I like the spit and pop of the tha trumpet.

Good job, Zuki
