Just wanted to ask if anyone knows much about these units, and if they sound okay with decent styles/rhythms?

Sound is not that critical but the patterns are.

Thanks

I had a WX2 from GEM a precessor of the WK2

It was the best sounding, most advanced keyboard of its times the one i should never have sold.

The WK2 is improved WX2, STyles and sounds where still impresive....

The styles and patterns are very well done (tough aimed at the european market) and there are dozens of free style upgrades all over the internet, espescially with hard disk option this is still an amazing machine and above that the freedom of customisation from both styles and sounds is still on par with most current models.

Keep in mind tough that GEM factories closed down last years so dont expect any support.

Hi Dennis and Bachus,

The WK2 was my entrance into the world of MIDI. At the time I thought it was awesome! And, as Bacus said, it would still hold up well against some of the gear thats out there today.

Obviously this link is out of date, but it might provide you with some info that you don't have.

I sold mine on ebay some time ago for abt $300.00. After some of the newer keyboards and modules I've owned, I too wish I had kept the WK2

One neat thing about it that I don't know why others did not persue, is that the WK2 has 8 single touch settings per style.

Have fun
Don P

The WK2 MIDI Arranger (module) is a very nice unit. It sounds decent, is easy to use, small and handy to cart around.

Don, not to make you feel bad, but I think you gave yours away for $300.00. Take a look:

Now granted the epinions estimate is a bit high at $1000-$1500. But the other link of $550.00 Euro (about $775.00 USD) is more in line with reality.

BTW, I have a pristine WK2MA with internal hard drive and the optional 4 part vocal harmonizer & sampler, and a factory gig bag if anyone is interested. (sorry for the ad).

Hi guys, I thought I would just add a comment seeing that I used to own a WX2, I think it was more comparable to the WK4 than the WK2 as the WX2 was a top end keyboard in it's range where as the WK2 was an entry level to the WK series. I liked the WK2 it was a very nice keyboard with some great sounds and highly recommended, as already been said, GEM keyboards still can hold their own even with today's units.

Good luck in your findings,
Take Care
Danny

Hi Dave, and group

Good to hear from you.

Actually, I don't feel real bad about the price, I kept it about 2 years, and I only paid $500.00 for it. In fact, I bought it from the GEM rep in the Texas area. Can't remember his name. He said it was a DEMO and it did not have the hard drive.

WDMcm, that quote is FAR too high....I bought myself an used (but as new) Genesys XP module for about 1200 bucks from a private who didn't know what to make with it(true,I had a bit of luck! )I never had a WK2 so can't comment on it,but I have a WX expander, and considering that the WK2 has a monochrome display (the WX has a proper LCD) ,I'd tend to think that the WK2 was a mid-budget expander. The WX can even display notation ,I might consider selling mine if someone is interested, but only because I've just got the Genesys XP

BUT, the WX sounds really nice even to todays' standards, the sequencer is great as are the styles (I don't play hotels or pianobars so I am not the best experts on arrangers,I just study and compose music, but I use arrangers because I prefer them to that freaky 'blank canvas' PC stuff).

The only thing I hate about the Genesys is the weight and bulk ( 8 kilos, not a little weight for an expander! ). But on the other hand, the thing is built like a tank. The WX is far cuter, though,a LOT lighter and smaller, and still a joy to use. For some reasons,it sounds very musical.
The Genesys does, too, although it is less intuitive, probably because of all the additional features.
