I get so pissed with myself when I post up and find I've once again misspelled 'from' as 'form' or added/missied a letter here or there. I try to be careful, but sometimes the familiar eye doesn't see the error as well as another eye. I suppose I could write in Word, then cut and paste, but who wants to do that all the time?

So, a spelcheker wld b nic if yu culd ad onne. Thanks, Nigel for providing us with this great place to meet.

If you've mis-spelled a word it's not hard to edit the post. Proof the post before you hit submit, and if you still notice something incorrect just simply edit the post. Making a simple typing error such as mistakenly typing "form" when you meant to type "from" is easily seen as a common typo and not a display of one's inability to spell Take note that I went back and edited this post too

Oh, for sure, Squeak, I do that all the time. I've noticed that a few other forums (that use a different protocol) include spellcheckers. I was just wondering if one could easliy be added to ours. If not, I'll continue to do as you suggest. In fact, when I have to go back multiple times, I also erase the extra 'edited by' lines.

If you haven’t done so already, download the Google Toolbar (Other toolbars also have the same facilities) and tick the box that checks the spelling as you type, (Once set you can leave it active) that way you should get your post pretty much spot on.
Hope this helps

Be cautious of using these 3rd party toolbars for spelling checkers. Hackers exploit security flaws in this and the spell checker that you think is being helpful can sometimes be infected with a malicious code that WILL check your spelling.., but is also a key-logger program that is hidden within the toolbar (anti-virus software doesn't always pick these up either). It'll check your spelling and record your keystrokes (such as passwords).

Reminds me of this old poem...

Spell Check Poem
(Read it out loud!)

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea,
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight for it two say,
Weather eye and wring oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long,
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should bee proud,
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaw's are knot aloud.

Eye have run this poem threw it
Your sure reel glad two no,
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

Why not write what you're going to post into any software like Word, Wordpad
or whatever you use first,
then when everything is as you like, just copy and paste into SZ.

Cheers

Maybe if we follow European Union rules we won't have to worry about spellcheckers. To wit:

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will
be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was
the other possibility As part of the negotiations, the British Government
conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has
accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as Euro-English.

In the first year, s will replace the soft c. Sertainly, this will make the
sivil servants jump with joy. The hard c will be dropped in favour of k..
This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
troublesome ph will be replaced with f. This will make words like fotograf
20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to
reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments
will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a
deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the
silent e in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing th with z
and w with v.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary o kan be dropd from vords kontaining ou and
after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor
trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze
drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru. Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al
be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.

...because that's a bigger pain in the ass than misspelling words.

124,

That was an interesting article/story your posted. Could you post the link to the story if possible?

Thanks!

Sorry, Chris. There's nothing serious about that, it was just one of these internet gags that someone sent me in an e-mail - you know how these things go around. Pretty comical, though and, I suppose, almost plausible, given some of the stuff the EU gets up to.

Firefox has a spell checker built in. Misspelled words are underlined in red and you can right click on the word to see other options/choices.

Here is a technical article from the Mozilla Knowledge Base on how to setup advanced features.

I loved Firefox until Chrome came out....much faster. Firefox is still a great browser...but my 2nd choice.

When I write a reply, it gets spell-checked automatically in the "Your Reply" box. I always thought there WAS a spell-checker in the SZ, but if you're having that problem, then it must be my Firefox browser that's doing it.

Hey Cassp, gee I would never have dared to open this topic, but here we are.
I always proof read my posts, but sometimes an error gets through. I am a pedant re. spelling and grammar to the point of being boring, boring, just like I am about Golf Rules. My spelling improves all the time by doing this.
I enjoy reading Diki's posts, if only for their grammatical content, his structure of sentences, and the ability to so eloquently put his "thoughts" on view.
124, You started with The Oxford Dictionary,
and ended with Colonel Clink. Very amusing!!

Unfortunately this old BBS software will not support spelling checkers, but it does let you edit your posting after you have posted. If you notice you have made a mistake simply edit it.

Or, if you had a Mac, there would be a system-wide spellchecker for everything you type...

That feature should not be possible, because during the years
it's not only spellcheck who cause posts to be edited to a
totally other post than in the first place, or even removed
when turned out in a different direction than the author
probably would like it to.
Sometimes the rest og the tread stay totally meaningless when
such happen.
