Quick question for the board here. I've purchased a used Roland Fantom X6 board from B&H Photo (got it for $1099!) and I'm going to be placing it on top of my Roland RD-300 (not the SX version). I am using the RD keyboard so I would still have 88 weighted keys without having to invest another $1000 in the Fantom X8. My concern is this...the RD doesn't have the same MIDI capabilities that newer boards have so I'm wondering, will I run into problems when I try to record tracks under the sequencer?

MIDI has been around quite a while now..
I don't think you will have any issues using your RD-300 as a controller into the X-6's sequencer.

Thanks for the reply. My concern is when changing patches, will the RD-300 be able to pickup that change or will it still be set as piano when I hit a key on the RD-300. I guess I'll find out Friday when I get the Fantom.

Ryan it doesn't matter what patches you select on the Fantom. If you're using the RD soley as a midi controller all you have to do is make sure you match the midi chan.

The RD will just become the set of keys.

Just to add..
Small warming:
If you change the 'patch' on the RD-300, it will send a program change message to the Fantom, and change that too.

Yes, I found that out. When changing channels in the mixer screen on the Fantom, the RD-300 did not follow. I had to change the channel on the RD as well. Doing so is very strange on the RD because there is no LCD screen, but I guess it was the norm in 1985. It turned out to be a PITB so I returned the X6 and bought an X8 to replace the RD-300 altogether. I'm VERY happy with my purchase.

I don't know if anyone's into gospel music and the Hammond organ here but I post regularly on YouTube. Here's my channel.

I use the Fantom X8 to compose background tracks for my Hammond videos.

As long as your happy, and your getting the job done.

Congrats on your purchase.

Well it was a good buy and it was really what I wanted. The Fantom X boards aren't made anymore and can only be purchased when someone has a B-stock unit available. I bought the X6 because I wasn't aware that a few days later an X8 would pop up out of the woodwork.
