I have two songs on my PC that I want to transfer to the H2. I have them saved as *.mp3 and *.wma files. When I transfer either of them over to the H2 they are listed in the appropriate folder, BUT when I try to play them is says INVALID FILE. I've tried to check the bit rates and samples rates and they seem OK, but I'm not really too sure. I've gone back to the manual and there is very little regarding transfer of files.

Can anyone help or recommend something?

I have also done it by taking the card out, putting it in the PC, and simply dragging the files into the folders on the card. Works great. I haven't tried hooking the H2 to the computer via USB, but it is supposed to work.
Hope this helps,
DonM

I've tried both methods - loading the SD card separately from the PC and connecting the H2 to the PC with the USB cable. I'm suspecting it's one of two things:
1) the file is causing the INVALID message or
2) there is an adjustment to the sammple or bit rates that will make the file playable.

I'm betting the file is corrupted.

I was not under the impression that the H2 played .wma files at all... (it certainly is not mentioned n the manual)

Perhaps just it's presence is doing the poor H2 in?

Also, check the sampling rate of the mp3. Anything other than 44.1 or 48k is not going to get played.

Pages 86 and 87 of the manual is pretty specific in detailing what can be played.

What settings are your .MP3 encoder set to?

The wma files are at 128kbps. The mp3's are at two different bit rates, 56 and 96 kbps.

I have considered that the files may be corrupt as I savved it from an online site, but they play easily in Windows Media Player and others. I'll try loading them into my Dell Jukebox.

Is there a simple way to re-save the mp3 at a new rate?

It is not the bitrate of the file but the sampling rate that has few options. Both the bitrates (expressed in kbps) are supported, but the .wma is definitely NOT.

The sampling rate MUST be either 44.1kHz or 48kHz.

And you are already probably aware, a 56kbps or 96kbps MP3 is going to sound pretty terrible... are you SURE you can't find them encoded at a better rate than that?

One last thing to check for is... is there any unusual characters in the name of the files? p.51 of the manual shows what can and can't be used..

Hope this helps.

Both of them are 22kHz sample rate files.

Use something (I don't speak PC!) to 'export' them as another MP3 file with a 44.1kHz sample rate...

When in doubt, do a 'get info' on a file in WMP or the Jukebox player. That ought to tell you what the sample rate is.

Thanks for the help, Diki.

Bah! I used Nero Wave editor to change sampling and bit rates - no success in the H2 front. I'll just use a different player for working with these two songs.

What are the two songs? Somebody here probably has them in a different format.

Send me the new versions... I'll see what is wrong if I can.

Thanks Don, but they're two Christmas octavos. I've solved my own problem though by bearing down and READING the music as I should have in the first place. This streak of laziness will pass as I get more comfortable with my return to the podium.

And Diki, thank you again so much for your offer to help. But since I've solved the problems, I'm not going to worry about the files. In fact, if I need them for the choir I CAN put them on a CD and let them listen and/or sing along. But I don't think that will be necessary either.

If you have Audacity (free audio editor) it can open many audio file types, and save as quite a lot too. Plus you can normalize, EQ, whatever you need.

It's not the best, but it's free! (and cross platform, rare these days)
