The songs I created on my Kn7000 were good, but I always felt they were a bit thin. For the music of my time (Sinatra, Big Band) the balance was good. Drums were not out front and the bass was adequate, it was a good sound.

On almost every keyboard that I have heard since I sold the KN7 have the bass way up front. Much of the music of today is not complete without having the bass up front, and that’s good, but Is their a keyboard out there that gives you a choice without having to change the factory presets?

The bands that played Big band music like In the Mood used an upright bass, not up front. When I change the basses on my Yamaha the styles are lacking, I feel they are built around an up front base.

Will Korg do it? Will Roland do it? I know Wersi will do it but it is a bit high.

John C. – Thank you up front.

I think some of that is simply to compensate for poor bass response in the tiny built-in speakers, at times, and then to match the general EQ curve that everything is recorded at, nowadays.

Listen to any contemporary big-band recordings, and you'll hear MUCH higher bass and drum levels than the old vinyl ever had. It's simply a by product of the recording medium. Vinyl couldn't get much bass onto a record, and bands were recorded differently, often with just a few mikes.

If they WERE mixed like you prefer, the other half of the users would be going 'where can I get styles with the drums and bass louder? ' There's no ONE perfect mix, other than the one you make yourself.

I simply feel that editing some volumes down a bit is not exactly an impossible task, or even very time consuming. How many bigband styles do you use? A couple of dozen?

Take you half an hour to fix them. An hour, tops...

Can you spare that?

BTW, there's an option on the E80 that globally adds some extra bass EQ to JUST the kick drum and bass Part. But nothing I know of that takes it OFF...

Bruno,

I play a lot of big band on the Korg PA. It is well received by my audience. Some argue about the lack of styles, but I have not found that to be the case and I can do absolutely everything on this board. The songbook is a tool that allows me to string together songs/medleys very effectively. Hearing is believing.

John,

I play a lot of big band tunes on the PSR-3000 and never experienced the problem you describe. It's possible that you may need to change your keyboard's EQs, or the EQ settings on your sound system.

John and others,

If you need some Yamaha big band styles that are geared specifically toward Sinatra songs, let me know. I'll be more than happy to email them to you.

Gary and everyone thank you for all the advice.

Gary I would love some of the big band styles. And I will give the EQ a better look. Thank you again.

Hi Gary

Seeing as I've got a soft spot for big band and combo swing styles I'd like to ask if you could please send me some of these?

Thanx

Scott

Hi John,
I've become totally biased towards my Korg.
No longer regret selling my KN7.

best wishes
