Hello everyone

I just thought I would pass on some info. I just got a call from a rep at Sweetwater and they are shipping the "E" or european version of the new Roland GW-8. Just an FYI.

Ah, not sure but good question. I will find out though. I'm gonna get the Latin version.

After comparing the style types and patches/sounds I've figured out a few things. I've only compared the E version and the L version but I'd imagine the other 2 types follow the design pattern. I broke it down so I could understand what the differences actually are. Hopefully it helps others.

Details here. http://www.roland.com/synth/GW/download.html

Styles
Both the E and L share the exact same style types for 1 thru 130 (Pop Rock,Dance, Jazz/Latin,Traditional). From 131 to 196 is where the style types are specific to the model type.

E= 131 thru 196 World Euro

L= 131 thru 180 World Latin
L= 181 thru 196 World Brazil

Sounds

Essentially same sound set as SonicCell which I currently own.

Greenkid, good detective work thanks!

I also wondered how much of a percentage of the overall styles were the same & what % makes it Euro or Latin etc etc ....plus you can always convert and add user styles to make it any way you like also. I hope to play one soon, could be the perfect lightweight backup.

Still trying to find out what the exact presets are for the European version of the GW-8. Also of concern is that currently there are no drivers for Mac OSX...the Playlist Editor and Style Converter as well, though they may be able to be installed on the Mac using WINE (has worked well with some other similar apps).

Hello

What "presets" are you referring to. The link earlier in thread has Sonar.ins files which can be opened and patch presets can be viewed. Or the Styles PDF has the list of the styles presets. I'm probably missing something.

From what I can see..., (unless I completey missed it) ALL of the GW-8 models will have the "western styles" covered, but each model has an additional set of sounds and styles "outside" of the western set that tailer to a specific region.

Basically for those of us in the US that want a western version.., well we got one, but it appears that model for the US will also be the latin version and on top of all the weestern styles will include an additional set of styles and sounds for latin music. Perhaps Roland is taking advantage of the fast growing hispanic population in the US. That's totally cool with me though because personally I'd rather have the latin version

I don't agree with the latin version being the only one assigned to the US. Why can't we have a choice? I'm very sure that many here would want the GW-8(E)as well.

Will it be the latin version? I'm very interested in this one. I've had my eyes set on a new Korg PA-800 (boy that's a great synth/arranger), but my idea of a reasonable price for a new arranger greatly differs from the wife The GW-8 would make a great arranger to add to my Yamaha and Roland workstations too.

If I can't sweet talk her into the PA-800 it's going to be the GW-8 for me. I'm really hyped about the sound engine on the GW-8 too. They've changed SO much on this model compared to the GW-7. With all the changes to this model it's hard to tell it's in any way related to the GW-7.

Well, I'm in the US, so isn't that all that's available here?

Soon find out, anyway...

Opinions vary as to the authenticity of the Latin styles, some are not impressed... some are

Sadly, we're both (my friend and I) Mac users, so I have no opportunity to try out the style software and playlist editor.

Details soon, anyway...

I wasn't sure if your friend was lucky enough to find a model other than the latin version.., that's why I asked.

I posted this in another thread but nobody responded. I guess this is why I'm a "lurker", nobody responds to me. This a just a joke folks,my weird sense of humor. The videos are in French with a lot of talking but I just fast forward to the music sections. Here is the link. Sounds pretty good to me. http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/gw-8

I am curious if anyone else has tried Roland Style Converter 3. I attempted to convert a Korg PA800 style but kept running into the following program change based error.

• In this SMF (chord 'chord'), a PC (number 'program change') exists on measure 'measure,' beat
'beat,' tick 'tick,' while a note is still playing on MIDI channel 'channel.'
Meaning: For the SMF of chord 'chord,' a program change 'program change' exists on MIDI channel 'channel,'
located at measure 'measure,' beat 'beat,' and tick 'tick.'
Action : Either move the program change, or move the note-off to a point earlier than the program change.

I am interested in determining how labor intensive it would be to convert styles from my Korg PA800 to a GW-8.

thanks
Brian

Tonight I will try and install the GW-8 software on my Intel Mac using WINE and report back on if it works!

Adi, having owned the Sonic Cell and Juno G..I agree there is not much difference ..if any between the E-60 sound engine and the Sonic Cell engine, found in the Juno's and the GW8..

GW 8(Brazil version) will be available in my local Roland Dealer next 28th.
Price: 23% minus than E 50.
I am thinking to trade my E50 but I couldn't find the scats voices in GW8 voice list what is an important lack to me.

Considering the harder navigation (without touch screen a lot of operations via menu), I have some indecision about this trade.
May be E 50 continues as companion of my E900.

All the GW-8 software appz run perfectly on the Intel Mac using WINE. For more info about WINE see:
http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX

I find it much easier to use a product called Macintosh Explorer when working with the Window's files created via WINE. It's a file browser for the Mac that is similar to Windows Explorer:
http://www.ragesw.com/products/explorer.html

I still have to figure out how to copy the Window's executable files (or shortcuts) for these various programs, so they can be placed on the Desktop, Dock, or Applications Folder in the Finder. Shouldn't be too hard! Besides using Bootcamp on the Intel Mac, I love being able to run these simple Windows programs on the Mac side without having to run any virtualization software. Awesome!

WINE or other Intel Mac emulators are only good if you have an Intel Mac...

Sadly, my friend and I are still devoted to our older G4 Macs. Sure Don't feel like buying a $1000+ Apple just to run a voice editor...

Roland need to make a Mac native editor PRONTO. A lot of musicians have these kinds of computers
