Gary,
While some memory chips actually provide you with the amount of memory printed on the chip, this is not usually the case when it comes to the amount of available, free memory. More often than not a small amount is used by the device's operating system, which usually accounts for the difference. I just added another pair of chips to my PC, which should have provided me with 1.24 gigs of ram. However, after doing a check disk it revealed there was just over a gig of RAM, the rest consumed by the PC's operating system.
