Bill, I am still awaiting Garritan's GM wavetable. Alas, it will be some time before they adapt their sample player to it, namely the ARIA.

I am interested in buying lots of virtual instruments, but in the past I've been burned by buying the wrong things. Is there any place close to New York, that has the samples already loaded so that I can actually try before I buy?

I have COLOSSUS, but I still prefer the sounds from my KORG Trinity and Triton Extreme.
well, colossus has one or two patches that I actually like...

Trial versions of these large sample type VSTs
Due to the size of the samples it would take some time to download, even with a really fast broadband connection (32 GB for the full Colossus) and so it’s unlikely.
Colossus is a good general purpose VST that covers most genres, (There’s something in there for everybody) however if you require some specific types of sound then choose the VSTs that cover it.
Goliath adds a further 8 GB of more specialised sounds (See list on the web site) and so will probably suit more people that like western music rather then Oriental or Asian etc.
Like any sound, in the end it’s down to personal preference.

My advice would be to build your rhythm section FIRST, rather than expect one VSTi to do it all...

BFD, DFH2, whatever works best for you on drums first (if they suck, everything sucks!), then basses (Scarbee, etc.) then guitars, and so on... Rather than get a VSTi that does it ALL, recognize that you probably won't need 808 drums and techno loops, but you DO want a variety of brushed drums, or whatever your priorities are. Specialized VSTi's allow for more choice in the areas that YOU are most likely to need.

As I have noted in the past, I use GM wavetables for the rhythm part and higher quality instruments for my lead or melody voices, e.g., Bardstown Bosendorfer Piano, Scarbee Bass, GPO, JABB, etc. With today's computers (RAM and HD), loading time and reliability is not much of an issue (live performances or studio).
