Has anyone tried using the BBE 882i http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/BBE-882i-Sonic-Maximizer?sku=180914 on an arranger keyboard?

Does it improve the sound? In which way? Is it useful if you have powered speakers?

Thanks, Chony

Chony,
The BBE 882I gives more reality to the sound, it separates the instruments given a clearer sound to the different parts. One control to accent the lows and one for highs. At times it is difficult to hear the effect – But when turned off you miss it immediately.

Danger – I made a series of recordings with the BBE and the highs were penetrating although it did not seem so when I was playing. – Like most products it must be used carefully.

I have a 482 and 362 for sale. John's description is pretty accurate. I love the difference in realism, but don't want to go back to carrying a rack of outboard gear. My thinking is that if you A/B the sound, there is no question, but people won't know the difference otherwise. I used to feel differently, and maybe I am just getting lazy.

I used mine with powered speakers. No problem.

Donny,
I work in a direction until it becomes almost complete. Recordings and MP3 will be my next direction and when I do I will post.

One thing at a time – I don’t know if I like to do it that way or it is just a good way to go at my age.

But—I’m feeling good!!

Garbage in = Garbage out...

All these 'Enhancers', be it Aphex, BBE, Behringer, and so on. Add some fairy dust.

They will not make a bad sounding mix sound great, but might make it sound better.

Compression can do the same, but with compression, it can take a great sounding mix, and make it sound worse.

I once worked with a DJ, who had a BBE in his set-up. I supplied him with a feed to 3.5K of sound system.
DJ's being DJ's soon had the output meters heading in the red, but the BBE wasn't improving his sound, it was making it worst as the high end was just piercing. Had to knock back the top end to save my tweeters and horns.
No doubt all the controls of the BBE where on max everything.

Less sometimes = more

I am sure you are correct in the above examples, but how does that negate the benefit of the proper use of the BBE ?

Well I just saw it for $179 and plonked down the dough. I figure its worth it to see how it sounds - if I don't like it, it'll be back on eBay.

I think its important to point out: Everybody who says that the BBE destroys the sound, is talking about with a real band with real instruments, or a DJ with great mixes.

I think that with a keyboard, which is all essentially fake sound (I've never heard any keyboard sound as good as a good CD), it's worth the try.
