Can you give us a plain piano demo.
Without any styles, just play piano sound with both hands, fast & slow, forte & piano. Thanks for all the birthday greetings yesterday.

the piano in the Tyros 2 is the same as the Tyros 1, so... plenty of demo's already to check out.

Got my T2 a couple of days ago. From what I see and hear the grand piano is the same as the Tyros 1.
Which is good, as I do like the standard grand!
By the way from my initial discoveries with this amazing instrument, it appears that you can create custom voices with individual user samples allocated to every individual key, and with up to 8 elements or layers (read samples) per voice.. The manual indicates you can import over 4000 samples (mono) or 2000 in stereo, and specify a tonal range for each user sample within each element. If this is indeed true then you should be able to create some excellent new voices on T2, perhaps even pianos!

My favourite piano on tyros1 was the bright piano and on tyros2 its become a live bright piano. I wonder how it must sound now.

Here you go, I dont have a harddrive on my T2 so I had to record these externally via line outs to the PC. I've encoded them as wma so they should sound a bit nicer!

In order first the Live! Grand, then at about 1'22" the Live! Warm Grand, then at about 1'50" the Live! Bright Piano. I used the octave switch to stretch the range when playing so you get an idea of the full range... excuse the performance though!

Can't believe I'm saying this but I actually prefer the Casio piano sound. I've been an acoustic piano player most of my life, so it is the sound I use the most on my keyboards.

I'm just tired of the Yamaha piano I think.... Interestingly, one of my good friends just bought a Clavinova and the piano sample in there sounds much better to my ears, compared with the 3000/tyros piano.

Actually the retail price is - $299

I do not like this Casio sound but I am not satisfied with the Tyros2 sound. Yamaha arranger piano sound are thin (plastic sounding). Hopefully when we all have HD inside and 1Gb in ram Yamaha will try to sell us better(thicker) piano sound

Very good, are you sure you have the price correct.
Compared to the heavyweight keyboards, it doesn’t have the depth of sound that larger samples can give, but even for a more expensive price then you mention it is still a lovely sound.
You might also like to go over to SPVWorld http://svpworld.com/tyrospiano.htm were you can download some Midi files, and then submit some Mp3 recordings to be incorporated on the Piano comparison there.

This is just my opinion, of course, but I've found that the very best (as in "full", "thick", etc.) piano sounds are not usually the ones that sound best in a mix or arrangement. They tend to require more "headroom" in the mix bus (ie. higher bit count) or they will start to sound "muddy". For solo piano, I tend to use the Motif ES or Triton w/Piano board. Neither is a standout but are probably better than what you'll get in the average arranger kb. Although nice to have, I can't imagine anyone choosing a 61 key arranger keyboard for a solo piano presentation; midi file playback of a piano performance maybe, but there are cheaper ways of doing that. I'm just saying that of all the voices on an ARRANGER keyboard, solo piano is the one least likely to be a deal-breaker for me. What is more important, to ME, is how well they blend with the other voices in the average arrangement. The piano voices on my G1000 are lousy (IMO) but sound just fine when used with most of the styles or in midi playback, especially with SMF. Bottom line, if you're playing out, no one is going to know the difference; if you're in the studio, you should be using something like GigaSamples or better yet, a real piano.

I have a Clavinova CLP170 as well as the T2, so I will be posting some additions to the piano shootout on svpworld very shortly. The CLP170 is the closest I've heard to a real grand piano, although much depends as I have found on the speaker and amplification. The CLP170 recreates this well, but record the CLP and then listen through the tyros speakers and theres a big difference! Also I agree with the last post, in a mix the CLP170 can sound overpowering and unbalanced whilst the purer and thinner keyboard pianos do better. For solo performances the CLP wins me hands down anyday, but for styles and backings I would go with the tyros pianos.
I do find the live pianos a bit muddy on the T2, but with some voice editing and eq you can achieve a much cleaner and better defined sound for performance. The samples themselves are good enough, just try tweaking the voice settings. The sampling features of the T2 though are good enough to enable the loading of new pianos in future, though I dont suppose we will ever see the harmonic sampling and key release effects of the clavinova.
