I need a small back-up powered PA. Have plenty of speakers.


Anyone have experience with the Yamaha EMX series? They make one that is 200 watts stereo, 8 channels (replacing A
Carvin with 6) 22 lbs. Can be run in stereo or you can use one amp to power monitors. Effects, rca in. $369 from Musicians Friend, no shipping charges and a free mic.

Anyone have or have experience with any of these series. There are three models-different power-300 and 500 watts on the others, I believe.

I've used the EMX series for years as my main PA head and never had a problem. I still have a couple of old ones sitting around as backups. I quit using the not because they didn't work, I just thought it was time to replace them. Great little units.

I have used this head on the job it works great with my 10" Yamaha speakers. It's easy to carry with shoulder strap and has decent effects and EQ.

I have a Yamaha powered pa. I don't have the model number with me but it has three 200w amps built in. Two are for stereo and 1 for monitors. For solo jobs I run my keyboard through the L & R with the speakers more or less behind me and then I use the monitor channel for the vocals with the speakers more to the front. It works well.

I do have to say that Uncle Dave never liked this amp because the effects, which are only reverb, aren't very good. I use the reverb from my SD-1 anyway so I don't really care.

I also like the fact that if I should ever lose a channel I still have two left.

I have had no trouble with it.

Thanks, Don. A friend of mine has this system, and brings it when we work together. I don't like it at all. I know you, Dave and lot's of others are crazy about it, but not me. It may be that the thing was against a wall or it may be the setting he used, but I'd never be happy with it.

I'm comfortable with a 20 lb head and one or two small speakers. I helped pack-up and load this system, with two bass units, and it was cumbersome and big.

It's just not what I want. Relly don't like the "fake bass" and lack on mids on anything Bose makes.

Russ, I understand, but obviously your friend doesn't have it set up right.
And the only thing the extra bass module does it let you play louder. I've never been in a situation that one won't handle.
There are PLENTY of mids on mine, and the bass is anything but fake.
Also, I found setup if far easier than dealing with speakers, stands and monitor system.

I have a Yamaha EMX series powered mixer.... no problems. Get the most powerful you can (stereo 500 watts) even for backup, there is no substitute for clean power - better to run a 500 watt head at half power than a 250W at full........ and I would always recommend a stereo one over mono, any day. Modern arrangers beg to be used in stereo, in fact, many have sonic problems played in mono.

I prefer the bigger, mixer-like powered mixers. They have two independent FX units, and a very good tap-delay - great for tempo synching ballads and the like. But they are more expensive. Perhaps one as your main PA, and use what you have now as the backup...?
