Hello,

I'm trying to use the GM voices for live performance with the SD1. Specially, I'm looking for sounds such as Timpani, which I just can't find on the preset set of voices.

Is there any way to use the GM voices for playing?

There is no special bank area for the GM voices. The GM voices are the regular panal voices that are available to play. As to where the timpini is, I don't know this right now because I am not at my store to see the product to answer you.
