I spent a little over an hour today playing the new Tyros. It is better than I expected.
Of course an hour isn't enough to explore everything, so I mostly looked at the features that I use most.
First the styles--there were several new ones and they sounded very good, certainly more live than than the older ones. A lot were carried over from previous PSRs though.
The R&B Styles seemed to be much better and there were several new ones there.
The Tyros has the best Grand Piano I have ever heard outside a real one. And it's better than a lot of real ones.
I listened to it first through the speakers of a Clavinova, but shortly had to switch to headphones because other customers kept crowding around--even making requests!
There were several new and improved Guitar sounds that I liked.
The Operation was seamless and everything extremely well laid out. I liked the display a lot.
I did not investigate Registrations, Sequencer, Multipads and only briefly the mic input. Guess what, the Karaoke Girl and Speedy Mouse work as they should. Oh I forgot, there was nothing wrong with them in the 2000 either. Wrong. I also didn't check to see if it is is upgradeable by Flash. I know they advertise it that way, but I believed 'em last time so why wouldn't they lie again?
Scott, you will love this keyboard. You will take it everywhere and leave your 2K in the car. Even though there are LOTS of similarities, the Tyros has a look and feel of higher quality. (Of course it should, it costs 3 times as much).
I don't understand where the music rack will attach. There seems to be no slots for it. Maybe there is a bracket?? This keyboard was already sold so I couldn't really unpack everything.
Will I get one? Not now. Maybe when they bring out the Pro version. They should have plenty of room to put it in the same case. There is lots of wasted space.
Oh, and those Megavoices? They didn't exactly blow me away but they were nice. Starting to sound like Ketron.

Yes, in particular a couple of Country ballads that were outstanding.
There were also several styles in the R & B group that were very good.
It seems that even the ones that were held over sound better now.

I've been PREDICTING this 'all along'.

That's why for the very FIRST time, I broke from my usual keyboard purchasing rule of auditioning BEFORE buying. Still, with my dealer's 45 day full refund option, I guess there's really no risk here.

btw: I had a buddy who owns both the Tyros kb & Tyros speakers run a test to determine just how long it takes to setup/breakdown the speakers. Total setup/breakdown time is just a matter of seconds (under 20). The weight of the Tyros speakers (including subwoofer) is onlyl 12 lbs, so the total weight of keyboard (27 lbs) and speakers is no more than the Technics KN7000, and substantially less than the PSR9000 and speakerless 9000pro (both nearly 50 lbs). Frankly, I'm pretty convinced the Tyros speaker setup inconvenience expressed by Uncle Dave will end up being a 'non' issue (at least for me), especially considering all the terrific enhanced features the Tyros has to offer. On top of that, I would expect that the Tyros speakers would sound better than any 'built in' speakers could.

Note: I was informed by Steve Deming (Yamaha USA) today that the official Yamaha
Tyros carrying case (with wheels) includes a built in area to hold the Tyros satellite speakers including snap on brackets. The Subwoofer however would have to be transported in another gig bag.

Anyway, my Tyros excitement builds with each new discovery of what the Tyros offers.

Don,
Glad to hear you liked the Tyros and guess what?.............It arrived before 2003 as I told you several months ago! The music rack will sit on the two brackets which are in the box and attach via two screws on the back on each side of the center. At first I thought these were for the speakers until I read the manual and realized what they were for. And, if anyone can't get a Tyros fast enough, I just received my second shipment of Tyros keyboards today. I have them ready to deliver if anyone wants one from California.

WOW, I leave for a few months and Yamaha slips another KB in on me! What will I do with my still-new PSR2000 and hardly used 740?
