I've never been into recording but I'm thinking I'd like to give it a try. I'd like to do something like Don did with his country demos. I see that Musicians Friend has a Fostex MR-8MKII for $249.99 but I do have Power Tracks which I use for Midi that can be used for recording. Has anyone out there used either of these and how hard is it to setup and record? If I use the computer do I need to buy anything else?

I've been using a Zoom H4 recorder recently to record live, and as a scratch pad 'idea grabber'. Mp3 to 24/96, solid state (SD card), easy auto recording, and USB 2 to transfer to your computer.

I have found it to be a very reliable, no muss no fuss way to record without a lot of learning curve... Check it out.

Montana, do you want to record at home or on the job?
Why not use the computer you just used to post?

I use my desktop in the studio, and my laptop in the field[gig etc].

I also have/use mini disk recorders[Sony and Sharp]

I have tried to use the 4 and 8 track hardware recorders, but to much bulk and hook up..The laptop remains the best for me..

Ditto I have the Zoom H4 recorder, it's serving me well. I found it more convenient than recording to the built in hard disk on my Tyros2. I recently took it to a live performance and recorded directly to the built in mic. Have to say I was happy with it.

It's all about learning curve... Yes, your computer will do a great job, but you'll probably have quite a learning curve (those of us that use them all the time often forget how long it took us to get it right in the first place) and unless it's a laptop, you can't record your gigs (something IMO EVERYONE should do from time to time, for a reality check on how things actually sound, rather than our impression of it WHILE we try and play and put on a show...).

You can still go the computer route once you find you need more than simple two track recording, but for right now, and for no fuss remote recording, the Zoom (or similar product) ought to be the easiest choice.. (IMO, YMMV, yada yada yada)
