well, I really don't know how to respond to this Fran--nor the version of Laura--I'm not going to critique your playing unless you specifically would ask for that. and if you like that "mighty wurlitzer" type organ sound, i'm sure that there are others that do, too, although it's the farthest thing from a jazz sound--not that there's anything wrong with that. however, I will get my nose out of joint about that style. I think it's godawful and corny, hokey, repetitive, and anyone who plays that in public should be shot. otherwise i'm fine with it.

So lets see what have we learned here? Hmmmm?......well now the full spectrum of music branches out in so many different directions & that is followed by each individuals taste & preference which is fine.....the problem lies with trying to induce your likes & dislikes on others....
it would be a very boring world if we all liked the same thing right? And who are we to say its right or wrong?........if someone likes it fine if they dont fine too.......there's no right or wrong just big passionate egos IMO.

there's no right or wrong? Come now. Great playing is great playing, and sloppy playing is sloppy playing, regardless whether or not I happen to like the style. I like country music and can't tollerate rap music in large, but I'd rather hear a creatively produced rap song, (if I could stomach the lyric), than a sloppy, poorly played poorly sung country song. IF something is played poorly, it's wrong, whether or not we can find someone who likes it.

Yes, but then again, there are basic elements of music that are universally shared among all genres (except perhaps way out avant garde). These include:

Melody
Harmony
Rhythm & Tempo
Dynamics

When one (or more) of these is lacking, or out of sync with the others, you'll not be able to 'sell' the song to most listeners.

** Jazzers seem obsessed with re-writing the "vanilla" chords to everything under the sun. It's OK to re harmonize a song to add color!


** The simplest, most basic interpretation! make teh tempo work for YOUR style. I do !


** This is a personal touch. Some folks have no idea of dynamic change. It's all or nothin' ... or they just don;t know the difference.


I love adding some UD to songs that are tried and true, and my fans don't seem to mind. I'm trying to teach my kids to add a bit of themselves in all their performances. I always thought it was insulting when people said that I sounded "just like the original" Grrrrrr.
I know they mean well, but it strips me of my personality. I am an artist, and I take artistic risks. Everyone should.
