Yep, you're right about the SM58 not sounding like the Sennheiser. To me, the Sennheiser sounds better.

What is the best way to plug in a mic (Beta 58a) into a PSR3000, what brand of cable and adapter ? Or do I need a mixer ? Thanks.

A standard XLR to 1/4-inch phono cable will do the job.

I was told that I needed an impedance transformer in a music store. In fact a sales person tried to use a regular XLR to 1/4 inch cable with Beta 58a and plug into a mixer mono channel without sucess. He then told me to buy an XLR cable and a separate transformer. I am trying to find out from an actual Beta 58a owner that plugs the mic directly into the PSR3000 what is the correct way to go. Thanks.

You do not need a transformer.

There are two XLR adapters that terminate into 1/4-inch plugs, only one of which will work. The one that terminates into a 1/4-inch mono will work. The one that terminates into a 1/4-inch stereo will not work. Additionally, Yamaha's wiring diagram for the adapter cable that is posted on their site will not work--the pins on the XLR are incorrectly numbered. Pin #3 is always the hot pin on the XLR and should connect to the tip of the 1/4-inch plug. Pins #1 & #2 are both grounded and connect to the sleeve.

Gary and Don, thank you. I got it. Last question - what brand of cable is considered good and where to get it. I was told that pros use Monster and Mogami brands. But I suspect that this type of application is not popular as most people use XLR cables to plug into a mixer, so these brands may not have XLR to 1/4 mono plug cable. Thanks again for the replies.
