Since these two things are diametrically opposed to each other, I thought it might be helpful to all of us to share tips on how to get the two to peacefully coexist. I have a few tried and true ones and encourage you all to add to the list (only add ones that are sure-fire).

1. ALWAYS lie about the cost of a piece of gear, ie. Tyros 2, real cost $3000; cost reported to wife, $397.95 (with the rebate).

2. Always precede your purchase with an unexpected gift for the wife ("just because I love you", etc.). Try to time her gift to arrive just before your gear arrives.

3. Pretend that that new module is really and old piece that you had stored away, dusted off, and put back into use.

4. Wherever possible, pay cash. Don't leave a paper trail such as credit card receipts, etc. If you buy off the internet, print and quickly delete any emailed order confirmations and/or receipts.

5. If discovery is unavoidable, say one of several things: "the store let me try it out for 3 months" (and hope she'll forget it's existence - or yours), "a buddy is trying to hide some assets from his wife's divorce lawyer and asked you to keep it for him for awhile", "it fell off a truck which you happened to be following". YMMV depending on how gullible your wife is.

6. Throw yourself on the mercy of the court (your wife), beg forgiveness (short of taking the gear back) - use real tears, if necessary.

7. If all else fails, what the heck, get a divorce. Think about it, who would you rather spend all day listening to, your Tyros 2 or your wife. Just saying.

8. Lastly, don't let your wife read this post.

Come on, Graham. You aren't taking this serious now, are you? Chas is just having fun.

Chas, you can always hide your gear at my place.

Hi,
well, had to make a pretty large sacrifice to get my latest keyboard.
Hubby wanted to trade my 5 year old Audi sedan for a new convertible. (I think we must be going thru mid life crisis, convertibles at our age haa haa)

Guess who won.
I pick my PA800 up on Saturday, we pick the convertible following week.

I'm convinced he wanted a smaller car so that couldn't carry keyboards anymore.

Wonder how a seat belt, open roof & cardboard box standing on the seat ,flapping in the wind would work??
haa haa

Somehow, I think I ended up with a win , win. Compramise is great.

best wishes
Rikki

Congrats, Rikki. A few of us have been saying all along what a great keyboard the Korg is. I guess the word had to come down through "official" channels first. Glad you feel comfortable with the OS. That was always the area I considered the weakest and least intuitive (at least compared to Yamaha). But you get used to OS's and in the end (with an arranger) it's all about the styles; and for me, and the type of music that I do, I prefer the Korg styles.

Glad the marriage survived the new aquisition. I guess the best possible scenario would be having two gear-lusting, keyboardists, married to each other, but then, they'd probably be living in a tent and riding a bicycle. Enjoy the convertible before the weather gets too cold (or are you heading into warm weather now?).

Hi Chas,
I used to be vary familiar with the korg operating system. I used to do one on one tutorials on korg i2's/i3's & korg O1W workstations for the local music store.
The PA800 appears to have a lot more functions than my old i2 ever had.

I've been studying a manual I downloaded, & some of the features sound amazing. Luv all the onboard editing functions of the styles & pads. Something my Ketron lacks.

I had been promised a new keyboard, mainly because hubby's just gone halves with our son , in doing up a little fishing boat. Turned round and asked what I'd like. I would have been happy selling my psr1500 & getting the new psrs700 or hopefully s900.

Instead, we took my audi in for a service because it had a slight rattle. His tongue was hanging out when he spotted a convertible . (They're not all that common in Australia. You see a few, but not many.) Jokingly said we can't take the money with us when we go, great cue for a more expensive keyboard ( PA800)also . Following day, I'm getting my keyboard & we've got a great new car.

We're heading for summer. Have to get a big hat, sunglasses & scarf, so people won't say, look at those 2 silly old
bug---rs driving round in a convertible.
I've always thought of them as a younger persons car, but what the heck, you only live once. haa haa

best wishes

Good stuff, Chas...

Patty is very cool about my purchases. I've even asked her straight up why she doesn't protest much if at all when I let her know I'm picking up something new. Her response was unless its some insane amount, its no biggie and she's pretty sure its more of a "need" than a "want" issue. We have a great marriage and we really talk about everything...not many secrets or anything. The right hand always knows what the left hand is doing, you might say...

Now...she does get at least one new diamond every year...so, I'm not sure if that's making a difference or not...

I gotta agree with you 100% Graham. I did the same myself. Been married for 27 years and my wife Kerry still encourages me to buy music gear because she knows it makes me happy.

I don't even really remember joining the band I have been playing with for 7 years now. When I was recovering from a brain aneurysm and coma in 2000 Kerry enlisted me in a band some friends were putting together knowing playing music was the best therapy possible. She was right .... damnit she always is She always encourages my gear lust.

Can't complain about mine either. Told her that being into music can be expensive before we got married.

Nigel, maybe your wife can start a workshop for those hardhearted wives out there. Who knows, it might turn into a multi-million dollar business. Hubbies, start signing your wives up. And if that doesn't work...get the wife a convertible! (thx, Rikki)

Now what if arrangers came with a Chippendale dancer included...

Taike

Wife Jann bought my first keyboard when I retired and that set a precedent. that was the Technics PR90 digital piano.
Now every year she starts asking me about this time of year what I would like for christmas and I just tell her. I then do the research, negotiate the best price and give her all the info. it is then up to her, and she always buys or orders the keyboard or gear. then my birthday comes two months later and we go through the same thing again.
When the new keyboard is installed and turned on she gets to play the first song and that is the end of her interest. We traded at one particular store here for many years and the owner would always look over my shoulder when I came in and ask whre is Jann and her checkbook
So, I have a 32 year collection of gear in here

Hi Taike,
definately worked in my case. I wanted a keyboard, he got "HIS" convertible. haahaa
Couldn't deny him the pleasure of a new car . He used to swap his cars , nearly as often as I did my keyboards. I'm surprised my Audi survived the 5 years it did.

Secret is, be nice without being super obvious . Worked for him. haa haa.

Thanks Taike,
ain't letting him out of my sight haa haa

Have to crank the volume up anyway, to hear myself over his Playstation 3. First game machine he's owned in his life & he's become an addict. All I can hear most of the the day is Aliens being zapped.
It's great, he's found a hobby I get to enjoy mine .

His forced early retirement is becoming more enjoyable. He used to be a workaholic.

Hi Trident,
thank you, I will.

That's a very interesting quote.

I think as long as you have enough for that proverbial " rainy day", & don't spend money you haven't got, why not spend a bit on what makes you happy. Lifes sometimes too short.

Nearly lost him 3 years ago to a nasty illness, so if a car makes him happy, what the heck.

For those of us who are divorced and/or single...the next marriage should be to a lady who owns a large and successful music store that stocks only TOTL arrangers.

She should also be too proud to let her husband work.

Just imagine Chas...if your next wife has a music store, she can chase you around the keyboard room and grab you by the organ.

That's gotta count for something!

If I buy one more piece of gear, there may very well BE a "next wife" in my future.
