Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mind set of this year's incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1985. They are too young to remember the space shuttle
blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine.

They have always had cable.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel",or "de plane Boss, de plane".

They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list.

They certainly DO remember a shuttle blowing up....it's just not the Challenger.

Even music major freshmen starting college this fall can't remember a world without synths & arrangers keyboards, as the Yamaha DX7 debuted in 1983 !

My first computer was a Commadore 64. It replaced my black, Underwood typwriter and with the monitor, disk drive, external modem and other accessories coast $1,200. The top modem speed then was 150 baud, which was about the same speed I could type.

Ironically, most of the freelance writers I knew back then said "What in the hell do you need a compter for--you have a perfectly good typewriter."

Happy Holidays everyone,

Gary

WE ARE SURVIV0RS!!
(For those born some time ago!)
We were born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, plastics, contact lenses, videos, Frisbees and the Pill. We were before radar, credit cards, split atoms, laser beams and ball point pens; before dishwashers, tumble dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners.......and before man walked on the moon.
We got married first and then lived together (how quaint can that be?). We thought ‘fast food’ was what you ate at lent, a ‘Big Mac’ was an oversized raincoat, and ‘crumpet’ we had for tea. We existed before house husbands, computer dating, dual careers, and when a ‘meaningful relationship’ meant getting along with cousins, and when ‘sheltered accommodation’ was where you waited for a bus.
We were before day-care centres, group homes and disposable nappies.
We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, electric typewriters, artificial hearts, word processors, yoghurt and young men wearing earrings. For us ‘time sharing’ meant togetherness, a ‘chip’ was a piece of wood or a fried potato, hardware meant nuts and bolts, and software wasn’t even a word.
‘Made in Japan’ meant junk, the term ‘making out’ referred to how you did in exams, ‘stud’ was something that fastened a collar to a shirt, and ‘going all the way’ meant staying on a Double Decker bus to the depot. Pizzas, McDonalds and instant coffee were unheard of. In our day, cigarette smoking was ‘fashionable’, ‘grass’ was mown, ‘coke’ was kept in a coal house, a ‘joint’ was a piece of meat you had on Sundays and ‘pot’ was something you cooked in. ‘Rock music’ was Grandmothers lullaby. ‘Eldorado’ was an ice cream, a ‘gay person’ was the life and soul of a party and nothing more, while ‘aids’ just meant beauty treatment, wooden legs, or help for someone in trouble.
We, who was born a long time ago must be a hardy bunch when you think of the way in which the world has changed and the adjustments we have had to make. No wonder we are so confused and there is a generation gap today..................
BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD.. WE HAVE SURVIVED!

Merry Christmas to you all.

... well "going all the way" was ALWAYS "going all the way", but it didn't happen very often!
