If you want to gig solid, go to Waikiki. Every club hotel restaurant has live music of all kinds.

Better add "Tiny Bubbles" to your playlist!

LOL. I would try that song, but NOBODY is as smooth as Don Ho singing that song. I can't help but wonder how many panties he has been pelted with. But then again, that's just my sick demented mind.

On the subject of Hawaian songs, the only other songs I know of are Blue Hawaii and Hawaian Wedding Song.

Anybody have others?

Aloha,
Al G

al,
There are tons of native Hawaian songs. In listening to them they have a similarity to deep country tunes and some similar instrumentation.

For some reason my audiences always assume I'm from Hawaii, and even ask if I'm possibly related to Don Ho . gee I wonder why? , so to play into their fantasy , I almost always include an Hawaian medley in my shows, along with 'bubbles' (hiccup) of course . Here's a list of the most popularly requested Hawaiian style tunes I do :

1) Tiny Bubbles
2) Blue Hawaii
3) Hawaiiawn Wedding Song
4) Pearly Shells
5) My Little Grass Shack
6) Aloha Oe
7) Hawaiian War Chant
8) Lovely Hula Hands
9) Hawaiian Sunset
10) Hawaii 5-0
11) I'll Remember You
12) Yellow Bird

HI AL and ALL,
I have in my hand a Book name of Authentic south Sea Songs from Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa.
It is for voice and all single note instruments - ukulele, guitar, etc. It has chord symbols and fret postions.
The lyrics are in native language, English and some in both. It has 46 songs, none of which I knew before I bought this book at a flea market.
The picture on the cover is a beauty and reminds me of Dorothy Lamour.
The back cover names 5 more books they have available with the same venue.
It is copyright 1955 by Criterion Music Corp. RKO Bldg, Radio City, NY 20 NY
Let me know if there is a specific song you require.

Well, sorry to disappoint all you arranger keyboard artists, but after personally auditioning the musical talent in Waikiki, keyboardists and pianists are not very popular. Actually, if you want to work stead, learn to sing very high almost yodel like, then learn to play the ukelele and/or the guitar.

It seems traditional Hawaian music contains Uke's, guitar, bass and some gourds and drums.

As for keyboards... I didn't see any in 7 days in 3 hotels and 2 bars?

Al,
While I had a similar observation as far as instrumentation....I do believe they would be open to paying 1 person who produced that touristie Hawaian sound and put on a good show. The other thing I saw as a changing trend... there were several solo acoustic guitar players in the lower end restaurants with smaller stages. Reminded me quite a bit of my early folk days.

Terry,

your right, it did remind me a lot of folk music. There is one little twist, the single guitarists also have a dancer dancing traditional Hawaiian dances which tell a story.
