Woudl the sound be the same for each channel?

Bill, if you use pan, and you have six tracks you only have to record three times..(on my system i have the luxury of 4 inputs into my pc,and 4 outputs on the PA1X so i can record bass drums gtr and keyboard all at once, of course turn off efx otherwise you'll get bleed...the sound (if recording dry) should be the same.

Denni, I don't have a p.c. sequencer. I can record the song as .mid, then track each instrument in the Fostex and export to p.c. for audio editing in Krystal. Right?

Are there any free sequencers? I don't want to buy anything right now, I have other more pressing needs. Like food.

With sequencer software, it allows you to load a .mid file and tweak each track?

hi again bill, just noticed you put a link to the fostex site (uuhh DUHH!! dennis )..hmmm okay you can record 4 tracks at once, what you need to do is use a conversion xlr to 1/4" jack cable of plug, that will enable you to utilise the two xlr sockets and the 2 gtr sockets for your four trax...another solution would be a double d/i connector and behringer happen to make one that is about $40 here so prob about $25 there...this would let you run...oh hang on you only have 2 outs on the yammi dont you?..hmm well forget that then....audacity is'nt but is the krystal prog good for midi sequencing too? i'm thinking that after looking at the fostex info,(and it looks like not a bad little unit for on the fly instant inspiration recording) for getting your hands dirty and accomplishing tweakable tracking you are going to have to involve your PC a lot more.
It really is the easiest and only way to do what i THINK you want to do, which is produce some decent recordings? yes?

yes you load the midi file ensure its a midi format 1 file and then open it and edit to your hearts content adding what efx you like, then send it all back from your midi out to the yammi and THEN record it thru the fostex as a l/r stereo file, or as individual tracks...the seqencer will allow you to send pan controls to each channel via the PC, so, ergo you could record drums left and bass right, then when thats done record gtrs left and keyboards right, then import those tracks into you audio program and add dsp efx eq'ing or whatever then bounce these down and then record your vocals the same way, as a mono dry file then import back into the pc for processing.
there are a few free ones out there, one in particular which does midi and audio is from the computer music magazine in the uk (comes complete with VST synths, drum machine eq efx etc etc etc) i will check on the site and see if it is downloadable, (it comes on the cover dvd every month "CM Studio" its called.....will let you know
cheers

hi bill, its only available as far as i can tell off the cover dvd from the mag which is Computer Music, should be available in the states...the thing itself is called the CM Studio based around an excellent free sequencer called Computer Muzys..the addy for mag's website is www.computermusic.co.uk and then follow links for CM Studio (its on a tab near the top, the other things in the drop down box come with it) its free, well apart from the cost of the mag...it might be a learning curve for you but its a great little program and will do exactly what you want to achieve. (ps i gotta go out for a while, but i will check in later..its noon here)
cheers

The Fostex MR-8 can record 4 tracks at once? I thought it was only 2. Or are you saying that adaptor thingie... uh... no, I don't understand. Plus, I can only play one instrument at a time, plus sing, so TWO is all I need, right?

Hi Me Bill (SemiLive):

I suppose if one wants to "tweak" a song to the max, multiple recording via tracks is the way to do it. For my purposes (just a songwriter) I record to tape directly from the Yamaha PSR-2000. I re-cut as many "takes" as necessary to suit my ancient ears. When I have what I think is a reasonable cut for a "demo", I then record from the tape deck to the Boss BSR-864 digital recorder and then transport that result to the PC via USB. Once in the computer, I do whatever editing is needed, amplification, low-cut filter, clipping ends, etc. Then I send the result to my Dell DJ for final listening before I commit to a CD. An additional benefit of this process, I can "rehearse" the song several times until I hit it just the way I think it should sound.

Hope this helps. RICE (The Lone Arranger)

Yeah, for general purpose, doing every track takes too long. But if it's for a very important demo, I think I'll have to track each one separately.

hi bill, looking at it it has 4 inputs, usually this means the minimum number of tracks you can record at once...i might have to go back and look at it a bit deeper, but that is usually the case, 2 tracks via the 1/4" jacks and two tracks via the xlr's, the adaptor thing was just so you could use the xlr jack for an instrument lead, or the d/i box is the better way..sorry if i confused you.
dennis
(just had another look at it and without d/loading the user manual from what the site says it records eight tracks, one would assume that each of the inputs is assignable to each of the recording tracks, and i again assume the 1/4" jacks are TRS, the xlr's are certainly left and right, meaning you can assign left and right...ergo 4 stereo input points = 8 seperate recordable tracks)BUT all this is academic as the yammi can only send at the most 2 channels, so in effect you are limited by that.

I'm pretty certain the Fostex can record only two tracks simultaneously. You can have more inputs, but they must be assigned to one of the two tracks.
