Slow songs, what top songs come to mind that YOU enjoy playing... that still absolutely blow you away how good they are. Not just good but really special to you. These come to mind for me.

He Stopped Loving Her Today, George Jones
At Last, Etta James
Statue Of A Fool, Jack Greene
True Love Ways, Buddy Holly
Don't Close Your Eyes, Keith Whitley
Vincent, Don McLean
You've Still Got A Place In My Heart, George Jones
Golden Slumbers, Beatles

The most recent one I have played is the one I am now addicted to!

The Matt Monro version of "On Days Like These" It really does 'blow me away' by virtue of not just the music but also the words.
When I got the original track from Capitol Records, what was a big surprise to me was how slow the best ballads were sung in those years.
In order to play this tune you even have to slow down a Slow Bossa to 92.
cheers

Hey Floyd, you listed some I don't know. Including the beegees one. Sometimes I'll announce "And a BeeGees song..." and someone will snicker. Then I play "I Started A Joke" and it goes well. I like it myself. It's a very pretty song, although the lyric is quite "different." I need to read up on that song... the story behind the song, so to speak.

A slow ballad that I've just started doing is an old Electric Light Orchestra song called "Can't get It Out Of My Head"

I had put off learning it for a few months but finally added it about a week ago. People danced and clapped for it, so it must be ok...

This is not too well-known, but the soundtrack from "Anna and the King"

How can I not love you. It's a sad song, but really good orchestra and melody IMO.

What are you doing for the rest of your life
Lady Blue
Here, there and everywhere
But you don't know me
You made me leave my happy home
All in love is fair
We're all alone
A song for you
Someone to watch over me
A certain smile
When sunny gets blue
Let's get it on

and on,...and ...on...so many great ones

If I loved you
When Sunny gets blue
Here comes that rainyday feeling again
Girl Talk
Yesterday
Only the Lonely

and my all time favourite "All the things you are"

I think the times when I first heard the songs have a lot to do with how I feel about them though..

Okay here are a few of mine...what makes the songs effect people, are the memories reflected in their own lives at the time...same with us, that perform the songs..

Are you lonesome tonight
Smile
Since I fell for you
Wonder of you
You don't have to say you love me
End of the world
I'm sorry
Loving you
Purple people eater[just kidding on this one]

"How Can I Get Over You, Until You Get Out From Under Him?"
Seriously though, folks, I like many of the songs they have been lifted, but for the life of me can't decide on one that is truly special. I'll love one for a while, then get tired of doing it. I'll revive it weeks or months or years later, and love it again for a while.
Sort of like romance, huh?

Scott...Tony SORRRRRRRY! You're right. Also, A Song For You is the Leon Russell one. I believe it was the last top 40 song
done by Ray Charles (several years ago). Going to see Leon at a local venue here in Lexington in a few weeks. Anyone remember the movie Mad Dogs and Englishmen? Would probably have been in the late 70's. It was a tour movie about Joe Cocker. Leon SMOKED on a Les Paul. Also, forgot "What are you doing for the rest of my life and When Sunny Gets Blue..two of my alltime favorites (ah those senior moments!).

Russ

Those were "MY" soft spots ... not necessarily the best sellers. That's what this thread was all about, right? The songs WE liked to sing.
If you asked a typical crowd at one of my places, it'd be more like:
Crazy
Misty
Just the way you look tonight
Lady
You belong to me
Memory
My way
....you know ....... gazillion sellers!

I know what you mean .... when folks say I sound like Tony Bennett, I say "Thanx" but if they say I sound like Sinatra ... I say ..... "You mean like I'm dead?" lol...
I'm quite sure I sound like neither .... people hear what they want to hear.
