George: I assume that the keyboard you're refering to is the 'new' PSR1100 (not the PSR1000) due out this summer, right? Though I was aware that both the PSR2100 & PSR1100 support USB connectivity, I had 'no idea' that the new PSR1100 will include a smart media card slot as well. Will the new PSR2100 also include this?

I'm really surprised (yet tremendously elated), because I don't remember reading this in the earlier PSR2100/PSR1100 NAMM press release annoucements back in January:
http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM03/Content/Yamaha/PR/PSR1100-PSR2100.html

so is this perhaps a last minute feature addition Yamaha just implemented?

Will the 'new' smart media card slot be replacing the floppy disk slot, or will BOTH floppy & smart media card slots be included?

What (maximum) capacity (in mega/gig bytes) smart media card will the PSR1100 SM card slot support? Also: Will it be possible to 'call up' styles located on the smart media card from Reg Memory?

If smart media card support really is being implemented on the PSR1100 (and PSR2100?), then it appears that Yamaha has addressed (and solved) the lack of mass storage support we've been complaining about on the PSR2000. I'm really anxious to hear comments and feedback from others now. - Scott

José.

I suppose I was hoping that the PSR1K and PSR1100 (typo PSR1000) might be one and the same, in a desperate attempt to discover Yamaha finally realizing how beneficial having smart media card support is on the PSR1100 and PSR2100. After all the anticipation & build up I was having, what a big letdown & disappointment!

I'm still quite surprised though, that Yamaha would include smart media card support on their PSR1K, yet not on the PSR2100, PSR1100, or Tyros.

There has just got to be a way of addapting a smart media card in paralell to the floppy drive. Just something I'll have to figure out on my own I guess.

Cheers,

Scott,

A while ago, before the USB memory card readers became commonplace, the most popular way to transfer data from a flash card to a PC was using a floppy disk adapter. It is a device which looks like a floppy disk, but it has a slot for a memory card. The drive reads the memory card data using its magnetic head. The PCs do reqire a special driver program to be able to communicate data through this $70 adapter.

I am sure those adapters are still available. It would cost Yamaha next to NOTHING to incorporate a driver for this adapter into an OS for the new keyboard (e.g. 2100). The other alternative would be to use a USB-connected flash card reader, which you can buy for about $40.

However, I doubt that Yamaha will support either (any more than they would change the design and actually incorporate flash memory for the OS). There is plenty of people here considering a switch from the PSR2K to a Tyros (or having actually switched already). By making the PSR2100 too good, Yamaha may be handicapping the sales of the higher-margin Tyros.

Just my $.02

Hey Scott,

Just got off the phone with a computer guy I know and he said the way this all sounds to him is that the company in the Ukraine has put together a flashcard adapter that has a built in driver, therefore, whatever information comes out of, or goes into the 3-1/2-inch floppy reader heads is automatically transferred. He said he would look into this sometime next week when he gets back from an installation job in Phili.

If you look at the thread by beakybird, I think you'll come to the same conclusion.

Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky this time,

Gary

The keyboard I am talking about is the PSRK1 which will be shipping in July. It's not the PSR1100 or the PSR2100.

Scott.

I saw a Cannon digital camera with a slot that contains a small stick for data storage Once connected to a special 3,5 FD it can tranfer data to computer.I think may be the same operation with kbds.

[The new Yamaha PSRK1 ($599.95 MSRP) scheduled to ship in July, is designed for people who love to sing and play. The keyboard comes with a built-in hand held microphone for singers and the display shows both score and lyrics during song playback. Save your music to a standard Smart-media card. The all new Performance Assistant function allows you to play along with the song. You cannot play a wrong note. Fun stuff here!]
