Casm edit does not play back styles. It simply adds a casm section and the other required data to a midi file and allows the user to save the file as a yamaha style file. It worksweel but I like the functionality and simplicity of Michael P Bedesem's freeware stylemaker even better.

I have only tried the demo versions of Visual styler and Real time style performer, and that was some time ago so I can't recall all that much, except that they do allow you to play Yamaha styles in real time. Joe Maas' One man Band also does this, and it allows for the adjustment of many parameters to tailor the software to a user's needs. Also, Joe participates regularly at these forums and often updates his software based on the requests and needs of it's users. That's service that is hard to match.

Thanks again Pilot. I am thinking of buying a laptop dedicated to music, and want to make sure it has an O/S that will work with XG Works.

That's what I use my laptop for. I have an IBM 380Z which has a PII 300MHz and 96MB running Win98SE. I use the "to host " connector to the 740 as it's a lot cheaper than a USB cable or a port replicator. Works just fine with XGworks , Cakewalk and PowerTracks. I connect them all up with MidiOx and MidiYoke and they all run simultaneously. I have Cubase as well on the desktop but only use it for printing scores.

Pilot,
Is the "to host" connector better (faster) then standard MIDI cables connected to the joystick port? I wud probably have to install software, that came with the PSR550 on disc, onto the PC.

The "to host" connection is 25% faster than midi, 38.4kHz versus 31.25kHz. Only thing is it takes up a com port and you can't link up other devices like you can with midi. Unless you're using an external modem or a com port mouse there's no problem. I use a PS2 mouse as well as the built in IBM Trackpoint. The only extra software you need is the Yamaha CBX driver which is fast and takes up very little room. It probably came on your 550 disk but you can dowload it anyway. I'm using the "to host" connection on my desktop as well even though I have a midi connection.
