In February of 2005, I was fortunate enough to attend a Maynard Ferguson Concert, and posted my delight on the SynthZone

Well, sadly I found out today that he passed away on Wednesday Aug 23.

He may have been the greatest Jazz Trumpet player ever. He will be missed.

I don't know if he was the greatest. He definately was one of the highest pitched.

I liked him best in Kenton's band but he did do well on his own as well.

That's very sad news Larry. I didn't know about this until I saw this thread.

Thanks for letting us know Larry. I was sorry to hear that. He was my favorite trumpet player and his band was the most exciting band I have ever heard, especially live.

Here are some links that have videos and other things of interest of him. Most videos are downloadable. One is an entire TV show. The first two is the way I remember him as this was when I would follow the band around when it came to the midwest.

.... I had read about this in the newspaper ... When I was about 15 yrs old, (about 50 yrs ago !!!) a friend of mine and I went to a jazz concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC ... this was my first jazz concert ever, and Maynard was one of the featured artists, along with Ahmad Jamal, Sarah Vaughn and others ... his death is a loss, but he has left a legacy ... having seen him in recent years I noticed that he kept his band 'young' with a constant infusion of excellent young players ...

He was the "upper register" King! You guys are right: his band was full of younger players from the best music schools in the country. What a learning experience/opportunity for them!

Sadly, like others doing what he did, he probably didn't make as much as a senior engineer at a Fortune 500 company (and he was one of the successful ones), but he made his choices, stayed true to his music and made the world a better place. He was that great mix of entertainer, educator and outstanding performing musician. He's proof that some musicians do make valuable contributions as educators in public performance modes.

I was introduced to Maynard in 1963 by Ray Brown on the Steve Allen show. He blew this smart assed 16 year old (at the time) away, and was one reason I was hooked on jazz for life.

In appreciation,

Russ

Here are number of videos of Maynard playing trumpet on Youtube http://youtube.com/results?search_query=Maynard+Ferguson

It was especially sad for me realizing he died just a couple of miles up the road from where I live in Ventura CA.
