I used the 2100 for the first time on the job with amplification..Overall report card score...70..I was very disapointed with sequences[doing drum mix to correct drums on the fly].The volume mix of the GM patches are not uniform , making the sequences weak..I guess I know why 90% of sequence makers use GS[Roland] followed by Korg, and just about no entrys from Yamaha[I am referring to commercial sequences]..There is some kind of annoying phase problem that modulates while playing sequences[I guess DSP problems]that make it unacceptable. Even the Vocalizer did not measure up with powered speakers..I did like the 2100 with it's own speakers at a moderate level, but amplification shows the true colors..Maybe it was unfair to compare it to other boards{G1000}, after all$11-1200 range does make it a pretty good "rich kid's toy"... I am not going to rework and worry about all the fixes during performance...It stays at home untill Donny takes it..There is absolutely no reason to use the 2100 instead of my G1000 or even the EM2000 I use in the band..After playing the 2100[key feel,,I can not get use to] it is such a pleasure playing Roland....I tried to like it, but to no avail..Personally I even think the sounds are average, and E pianos are way to thin..If Donny does not want it after my report card...Make an offer..

Thanks for your honesty Fran. Some people differ with your opinion but your opinion is what matters most. If Fran ain't happy nobody is happy, right? The perfect Keyboard is out there Fran just waiting for you to snap it up. Maybe it's not out there 'yet' but eventually you will find your dream Board. That is my hope anyway; that you do.

Best regards,
Mike

I would agree that "out of the box" midi files tend to play best on Roland GS platforms. I have had to manually repatch and remix most commercial sequences to get the best from them on the PSR2k. I think they sound damn good now, mind - but I suppose I would! I also feel that the 2k drum patches are not very stunning.

Fran,

Call Uncle Dave--He only has one 2100, and everyone needs a spare. I guess if you're doing a lot of sequencing, the 1000 may be better, but I have no idea because I do very little if any during live performances. I would buy it, however, it would probably result in a drastic change in my marital status because there are four keyboards in the office now, and she would DEFINITELY notice a fifth.

Good luck on whatever you decide upon and keep in touch,

Gary

Where the 2K/2100 shines is in live performance using the styles, and that's because of the ease of operation. It's light weight makes setup quick and saves the disks in my back. I'm sure there are better midi players (a laptop for example)!

Hello.........I would have never expected the GM patches to be anything great..................I WOULD expect the XG patches to be good. Did you try your sequencing using XG or panel voices? I treak a lot of styles and never use the GM voices......only XG!
