My pastor bought a vintage KORG 01/W that he said is still the best in the market in terms of the sounds it had and capabilities. I thought the sounds were quite remarkable.

What do you guys think ?

The O1/W was a good keyboard for it's time, at today standards is outdated, why: No General Midi map, floppy no DOS compatible, and soon, parts like swtich/key/contacts perhaps keys...will be getting hard to get...still sound good, If it is an instrument that is going to be getting a lot of usage like in practices and performances, I seriusly consider a current model, besides you became compatible with the world like midi files, patches, etc.

While the 01/W has GM limitations (polyphony is certainly one), you can get a usable sound set. Take a look at this page: http://korguksupport.co.uk/page.cfm?pageid=357

Hi Han (Lukitoh): I too fondly recall the 01/W as I too owned one (actually the 01/W FD version, of which included a built in floppy drive). The 01/W FD:

was my second foray into synth ownership, my 1st being the futuristic looking Korg 707:

The 01/W was a terrific sounding keyboard for its time (circa 1990) . I distinctly remember the acoustic piano to be an impressive improvement over the Korg M1 predesesor. Though the 01/W is still perhaps a capable keyboard, by today's standards, it pales in comparison with (both in sound quality & features) todays leading synth workstations. Han, thanks for bringing back my fond Korg sound memories, and which is perhaps the reason, I consider getting a Korg PA1/X now. - Scott

My pastor had the exact model you mentioned with the FD. He is a true professional keyboard player. He can accompany anyone and play just about any style of music: jazz, etc. I think he used to play in clubs before he gave his life to Christ preaching the gospel and minister to people. He also plays bass, drums and guitar well.

Next time we have a jam in Bay Area, I will try to bring him along.

O1 w (and fd) has waveshaping feature that newer models x3,n series, tritons lack.waveshaping emulates warmth of some acoustic instruments.Eps,analog strings, sax even ac piano are great in O1.don't forget great keys and solid hardware(nearly 15 kgs.yes 32 poly but Good looking and sounding(unlike flashy trinity or tritons).
