Many public venues (church, catering halls, hotel, etc) have a stage or a portable riser available to perform from, but there are many other venues that don't, so the client (or myself) may need to rent one.

Performing from a riser helps to project a more professional show presentation, so
I'm now considering purchasing a small portable riser for myself, both for my own use, as well as to rent to clients. I realize risers can take up storage space so I want the smallest & lightweight (aluminum?) one available (6 x 4 ft and 12" - 16" high) to accomodate just me and my KB.

Does anyone here own or can anyone recommend a small portable riser?

Thanks,

Scott

This is the main reason that I stand for performances ... it gives a better visual while playing. If you need a rise .... check out Humes & Berg(sp?)... they make band instrument cases and such, and I know I've bought them for drum majors and soloists before.

A renovation at a very swank Golf and Country Club I used to play put in a permanent, cushioned dance floor that went all the way to a wall where they wanted their entertainment. Then, they had an portable aluminum stage (approx 6' x 12')that sat on a portion of the cushioned floor.

My duo was the first group to play there after they made the "improvements'. It looked great, but was totally unusable.
1) Any shift of weight on the stage caused the aluminum to creak and squeak.
2) The creaks and squeaks were amplified thru mic stands with live mics.

The fact that the stage was so noisy was one thing...but the fact it sat on a cushioned floor - which permitted even more movement and noise from the aluminum parts - was unbearable.

The manager, maintenance guy and I all agreed I would have to move the duo off the stage to an adjacent area in the corner of the room. The move caused other problems relating to the proximity of tables to the band and it was one of those nightmare jobs that most of us have had at one time or another.

I am no prima donna, but I told them I couldn't play there again until they got the problem resolved. That may have ticked them off, because I have not had any other offers from them...and that is okay with me.

A lot of these fancy places spend tons of money making their venues look great with very little thought to practicality, positioning of speakers and accoustics.

Eddie

These look like they could nicely double for a game of ping-pong during breaks

Scott: We recently put together 2 small risers, approx. 4' x 3' but they could be made larger if we wanted. basically a folding framework(hinged) to fold up flat for transport. When opened up, plywood sheeting lays on top with stops to prevent movement. They set up in seconds, and really do add to the visual image for the band.
For my solo stuff, I usually stand as I'm doubling on guitar as well, plus the bench takes up much needed room 'cos my feet are surrounded by pedals as it is. ,
Scott, I've sent you an e-mail with graphic attached.
