I need some help here.. I have XG works and I have no problem using my keyboard with this.. However I also have a neat program called "MTV Music Generator" It's a pretty cool program, and I realized last night that you can do sooooo much more with it.. You're supposed to be able to use a midi keybord to trigger the sound sets, but I can't get my PSR to work.. I went into the options on the software, chose Yamaha CBX driver, Set the midi transmit ch. to 1, but I cannot get the keyboard to work just as a controller... Anyone have any suggestions?

Did you check on the PSR to see if the keyboard was set to channel 1?

I'm pretty sure I did this..I checked the Transmit Ch. and set Ch. 1 to R1.. Is that correct? Should I turn the others to the off positions?

OK Squeak, let me see if I got this..
The MTv generator is a soft synth module ? Is this correct ? If so, your 550 must be set so that your keyboard (PSR) transmits on midi channel one. There should be an option to set the main voice ( panel voices ) to transmit on ch 1. You can assign it that way as well and just turn the PSR's local control off. In this setup it does not matter how you set the PSR's midi receive channels. Than XG works should "see" the MTV program as a soft synth and it should show up in the XGW preferences ( midi out ) as a midi device. If all else fails, you can email me and we can exchange phone #s and I'll try to talk ya through it.

I'm not sure if you'd call the MTV program a softsynth... It has a crap load of pre-recorded riffs in many styles, and there are also sounds you can play using your keyboard (there's a crap load of them too, and many are really good).. I general you just grap a riff and drop and click.. Kind of like Acid. I went under the midi funtion on my 550 and I set the local control off, and also set the tempelate to "Master Keyboard".. I then went to Transmit Chan. and set Ch.1 to (R1)... I must be missing something because I know the midi chords are working properly because I'm using XG works.. Also the MTV program isn't being used with XG works.. It's just a stand alone program I'm using, and trying to get my 550 to work as a master controller so I can do reatime recording with the program.

Setting R1 to channel 1 is OK. Make sure you select R1 on the keyboard. You didn't mention how the 550 is connected to your PC. I take it you're using the "to host" connection if you're using the CBX driver. Other than that it looks as though you have to set something in the MTV software to enable it to repond.

Actually I'm not using the Host port. I'm using a midi plug running from the Midi I/O of the keyboard that connects to the computer via the joystick port.. This works fine for XG works. I still can't understand why it won't work.. On the software I have it set to the Yamaha CBX driver, midi ch. is set to one, and everything else appears to be in order.. It has got me fairly confused..

Well, the CBX driver is really for the com port/to host connection. If your joystick port is on a SoundBlaster you want to select the SoundBlaster ports. On mine they are 330 in and out. SoundBlaster compatibles should also use the same port.

Hi,
just out of interest, is it actually a midi type program or are the riffs actually audio loops?

I recently downloaded a demo of a program called Bio Drummer, i was expecting it to have drum sequences in midi format that I might have been able to use as a drum part for a style, but alas it turned out to all be done in audio loops?

best wishes

Some of the riffs are audio loops, and some are just single notes on say a guitar or organ. It states in the manual for the software that you specifically can use any midi keyboard to input the notes, and record in realtime using the keyboard as well.. I'm totally lost on it..

Now that I think about it I think it's safe to assume that it's the type of midi cord I'm using... I think for this program (using my 550), I'd probably need the "To Host" cable..

If you have the correct midi driver for your joystick port you should be OK, but you're probably better off with the 'to host' cable as it runs 25% faster than standard midi.
