I'm about to replace my Tyros speaker system with another monitor system. The replacement will have much larger speakers (8.5cm bottoms) but no sub.

What exactly does a sub do? They don't seem to be made the same way as regular speakers. Will I get the same thump out of larger bookshelf speakers than out of a Tyros sub?

Subs are long throw speakers that have a much different frequency response than standard speakers of the same diameter. The speaker's cone edge is constructed of a very pliable, rubber material that actually rolls back and forth with bass sounds.

They put the "bop" in the Bob Shoo Bob Shoo Bop !
They add the frequency you FEEL in your gut. That rumble that makes feet move!

Thanks for bringing up this subject, Chony.

My main amp is a Peavey KB300 and I'd like some of the aforesaid "thump" added to this. Any advice on which brand and power output of a sub for this unit would be appreciated.

The back of the Peavey has 1/4" jacks for "pwr amp in", "preamp out", (these are both labelled 1.0V 0dBV, plus another one labelled "line out (0.3V -10dBV). Which of these would a sub be connected to? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Dnj. It's a bit pricey, but hey Christmas is coming. I'll have to nudge the Finance dept. (yep, the missus).

The KCW1 is one of the most affordably priced, effective subs out there that is actuallyt MADE for road use. The home stereo units have the tone, but their road-worthyness has yet to be proven.
Use the line out from your kb amp ( which, BTW is more than TWICE the cost of this sub )and go into the sub. Another way is to simply add a bass amp that has a crossover. Filter out all the frequencies above 180 Hz or so ( personal taste ) and it'll give you that "kick" you want!

With the through-puts, would this unit work well in a stereo studio monitor situation, say with a pair of Alesis M1 speakers?

Thanks for all those responses,

I was finally settling on the Behringer 2031a's for my studio and now I'm told I need a sub... Does anyone know of a good monitor set that includes a sub, that can bob and bop, for under $500.

This is for HOME use???
There are TONS or 3 way systems that are affoirdable and include subs. The most talked aboiut onm this forum seems to be the Logitech 2200, although I would never trust them for mixing critical material. Studio monitors need to be free from colorization and a sub almost always adds an unrealistic ammount of bass.
I'm a fan of subs on stage, but not in the studio.

Please update your email address. I have been trying to reach you but your profile address seems incorrect. I think we have similar musical interests...

I don't know beans about sound but I can tell you that the Logitech z2200 even makes it as a PA for a solo guitar dude. Just doing a honky tonk show, guitar/vocal, my vocals sound much better and the guitar sounds great. I have a baritone voice and the lows sound good to me. I think the sub is what is making the difference.

It has to be the best $50 spent EVER.
