Yam psr2000, "D" fill button, I push it while playing like I always have but unless I _really_ concentrate and carefully push the button (which is very hard if I'm sailing along pretty busily), it doesn't activate.

This is in addition to the aforementioned problem (a thread awhile back) of a couple of note keys "G" and "A" just below the "B" and "C" fill buttons... they kind of have a sticky thing going on. When I hit those notes, the keys stick a microsecond like they have glue on them.

So, I am wondering if these problems are related. I haven't spilled anything on the board.

I was an organ tech for ten years and here is what I would do:

Turn the keyboard upside down and carefully remove the screws holding the bottom on.

Usually there is a rail under the keys that holds them on. Remove the screws attaching the rail.

Carefully remove the section of keys that are sticking.

Using a pipe cleaner and "Denatured Alcohol" clean off the gunk that is causing the sticking.

If you can get at the "D" button contact spray a little WD40 on the contact. Under no circunstances do you ever use "contact cleaner" or TV tuner cleaner. These types of cleaners contain silicon and it will ruin the little carbon impregnated contact. You may have to see if the plastic "D" button cover will pop off and get at it that way.

Reassemble it. As long as you keep yourself free of static build up by first touching something metal you really shouldn't hurt anything in there. Most everything electrical is on one circuit board and there is no need to mess with that. The key sticking problem is mechanical and at most the "D" button has a worn contact but it probably is just crude.

I suspect the problems are unrelated. The PSR2000 buttons wear out. You need to get an electrician to solder in new contacts. While you're at it you should replace all of the fill buttons. While the keyboard is open, you can clean up around the keys.

I had this problem numerous times when I owned the PSR2000/2100. Luckily, I had a high school aged geek friend who would fix the keyboard at $20/hr. The three times I had this problem, it took him just one hour.

I have a Tyros. It's less than 2 years old (I think) and I play it only an hour a day. The Synch Start button requires a good, solid firm push to activate it. And now the top of #4 button under the screen is like that, too. It's a pain, because I end up pushing these buttons twice. The first time, nothing happens, then I push it much harder to get it to activate. I am not heavy handed on the keyboard at all. I think Yamaha uses cheap parts.

These posts are a good case for saying -"ALWAYS cover up your keyboard when not using it, and not just a cloth (they let dust and spilt drinks through), but a good custom made plastic one. Dust is your enemy!!"

With the costs of some arrangers now, and how amazingly good they have become, you are going to want to keep them for a VERY long time. Dust, tobacco smoke and dirty hands will take years off your keyboards life.

And buy a GOOD flight case if you travel often - cheap padded bags will not stand up to years of gigging, and do not protect well. Don't assume that nothing will go wrong, assume it will and prepare for it and your expensive arranger will keep on truckin' for years!!

Since I posted this originally, the sticking keys problem went away but the FILL (MAIN) buttons have gotten worse. The C and D fill buttons are almost impossible to activate. I'm going to have to take it apart. But before I do, I thought I'd resurrect this in case anyone wants to say NO DON'T DO THAT.

Hopefully, I can open it up and if it looks like it's over my head, I can just reassemble it and no harm done. My aim is to do the WD40 trick Tom mentioned.

Hello, I've only just read this post.
Fill buttons not working or sticking is not acceptable, but if you can't get these fixed can you connect one of those 10 way Yamaha pedals to a Psr2000 and use those to trigger fills and variation changes instead of fighting over faulty buttons?
Diki is also correct, dirt and dead skin from your fingers, dust and cigarette smoke especially if you are out playing in a club can soon damage your expensive arranger so cover it up when not in use.

I suspect the problem arrises from performing in humid, smoke-filled environments. When I performed with the PSR-5700 at an American Legion in Maryland the smoke was so thick it looked like the building was on fire when the door was opened. After just a year of playing there once a week the inside of the keyboard looked like someone had sprayed a layer of sticky, brown tar on every component. I eventually had to replace all the switch boards, key pads and cleaned everything else with denatured alcohol. The life expentancy of keyboards in this type of environment is not at all good.
