*Anyone had experience with the Crate PFR 12 or PFR 15 self powered speakers? I am more concerned with clarity and response than volume. How does Crate compare to the Mackie SRM 450, JBL Eon 15 G2 or the Yamaha MS400?
The Crate wattage is 240 vs 400 for the Mackie, JBL and Yamaha. Is wattage important for volume only or can higher wattage translate into clarity at lower volumes?

*I need to trade in my current setup (two Polytone Taurus Elite amps) and will probably have to buy through the dealer where I bought the Polytone amps and he may not be able to get JBL, but is a Crate dealer.

*Thanks for any replies!

There is NO comparison..... The Mackie SRM 450's are superior all around.

Your ears will tell all. Go and put them side by side with anything in it's class.

I am very surprised Yorkville speakers are never talked about on this site. Has anyone ever heard of them? Anyone ever use them? I own a pair of powered Yorkviile's and would compare them to the best of class at the same price point! Another excellent speaker is the EAW line. If you ever get a chance to demo these I think most others would pale in comparison. (note EAW's are VERY expensive!!)

Fran Carango and I have both owned several Yorkville products and they are very high quality. They are a bit pricey for the upper end stuff, but well within the range of Mackie and Yamaha et al.
I've had the pleasure of using EAW stuff on occasion too, but I was never convinced that the extra cost was justified. In addition to being expensive, the are very HEAVY. (at least the ones I used were)
In todays market, there are so many good sounding sound alternatives for the working musician, that it should be easy to find a rig in whatever price range you are working with.

My Response, was just a comparison to the original post of the Speakers mentioned.Of course there might be others that exceed these.

How does Crate compare to the Mackie SRM 450, JBL Eon 15 G2 or the Yamaha MS400?

RJ,

I've used Crate products for 12 years. Crate speakers sound good and handle highs and lows very well.

I've got an upper end guitar amp with 2 15" speakers, and an extra Crate cabinet with 4-12" speakers. Crate products are TOUGH. You can drag them anywhere, bounce them around, put them through hard high volume use, and they just keep working.

My son has a hard rock band, most of which uses Crate - they're LOUD and HARD on equipment but none of them have had an ounce of trouble with their Crate equipment. They're the most popular band in our area.

Presently, I'm using two Samson EX20's. I like them a lot. They have great sound, a lot of punch and can really crank at high volume. I'm sure the Mackie SRM450's are better than the EX20's but they cost twice as much. If I had to have the VERY BEST, I would get either the new JBL G2's or the new Yamaha self-powered speakers (can't remember the model number now) or the Mackie SRM450's (in that order). But sometimes you've got to draw a DOLLAR BILL in the sand and say, "I'm not spending more than that!".

You can get two Samson EX20's for $650.00 at http://www.pulseonline.com and they ship fast. I think they're the best you can buy in that price range (Uncle Dave suggested them, so I tried them out. Thanks, Dave.)

Regards,
Steve
