I guess it's AA batteries. For a Walkman-like CD player with headset. When I walk, I listen to music to get inspired to write. This sucker goes through batteries like mad. Do rechargers work?

You can buy rechargable AA batteries at Radio Shack, BJs Wholesale Club and many other locations. They're not really expensive, and the chargers have really come down in price as well.

Get Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeables rather than Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) - more capacity and reduced memory effect. Also more ecologically friendy when disposing.

Use a charger with a "discharge before charge" function as this keeps any memory effects to a minimum.

Possible problem could be that these sorts of rechargeables are 1.2v per cell not 1.5 and some units objects to the lower voltage. However you can get rechargable "alkaline" cells which run at 1.5v but I've never used these so I don't know whether they last as long as NiMH cells.

Another possibility is to get an external battery holder that takes a suitable number of "D" cells and send that in via the external power socket (asuming it takes DC). Doesn't do a lot for portability, unfortunately!

Hope this helps!

The NiMH as stated above are much better as rechargeable goes. Regular alkalines will last longer for usage. Radio Shack used to sell the best batteries. The "rechargeable" alkalines can only be recharged a few times and it is not worth the effort. I would go with NiMH and just keep one set charging while the other one is walking with you. I have a portable CD/MP3 player and I understand the frustration with it running down since the motor must be kept going. You might want to try a portable MP3 player that works on a memory card or something so it would have no moving parts.
Good luck.

The best rechargeable battery (plus charger) at the moment is this "15 minute" system from Rayovac:

These guys have it VERY cheap:

15 minute is very fast, but strange they do not mention the capacity of the batteries.
They do say: "Will charge any NiMH batteries, but at slower rate". So what is the capacity of these batteries?

I have a flashcard recorder that runs 2 hours on 4 NiMH batteries, IF they are 2100 mAh. So what are those 15 minute batteries? 800 mAh maybe?

The highest capacity for AA batteries at the moment is 2400 mAh. Other types can go higher than this.

You always need a charged reserve set at hand, because the bateries suddenly stop working when they're empty.
