Hi all
I ask my self a question, perhaps a stupid question, but...:
Why there are no women in this forum (and arranger forums, in general)?

I suppose the reason is not a lack of musical capacity in women, of course. Perhaps a reason is women do not act in public as one-woman-band, women do not gig.

But women may play at home, as much of synthzone members which do not gig. And nevertheless, I can't remember to have read more than two or three writings by women here.

Perhaps women have less time for hobbies as playing kbs?
Perhaps they attend house and children while we (men) play music?

Or what? Sexism in the forum? Is there a hidden reason?

Actually, there are a few women in this forum, but they rarely post. Personally, I think they just sit back, read the stuff the guys put on the board and laugh like hell.

Cheers,

Gary

There are also less women in music generally having been a male dominated art form over the years.

Thanks Bryan,
members wouldn't realize with a name like Rikki that I was actually a female.

I'm inclined to agree with Terry. I'm only a keyboard & synth hobbyist ( junkie) and have been since the mid 80's. Back then, from mid 85 to the mid to late 90's ( pre internet) I really never came across any other females that shared my passion for keyboards and synths. I helped out a bit in a fairly large pro music store as a backup for the keyboard salesman by helping customers work out some of their keyboard problems ( midi etc) It freed him up to get on with his sales. In all the years I had involvement with the store, female customers were far & few between, in the keyboard & synth department.
best wishes
Rikki

I asked my sister, who is a musician and plays arranger keyboards, this exact question. She answered that women are not interested in machines and eletronics in general.

Hi,
I saw her name crop up in one of the other posts. Something to do with KN7 & VA7.

Of course women in music has changed over the years i.e., Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Carol King, Shankar's daughter Jones, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez to name a few. They are not only the "canaries" anymore some are outstanding players as well.

Marilyn no longer has the VA7. I misspelled her last name, s/b: Boissoneault. Sorry
I never liked the female singers from the past: Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell. They all sounded like they were singing using falseto voices. Now we've got: Enya, Celine Dion, Sarah Maclahlan, Whitney Houston, Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, etc. They all use their real voices. I now prefer female singers.

Starkeeper, my point was more about playing ability, rather than vocal quality. In the 40's the women were "just canaries" (singers)the 50's brought out great soul singers, like Gladys Night, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Martha & the Vandellas etc, who to me still have the best female voices of all time (the soul singers). The 60's brought us the folk simgers like Baez and Mitchell and then Cher and one of my fav's Stevie Nicks.

With all respect to your opininon, I think the female simgers today don't even come close, except for W. Houston you mentiend and a few others.

Now add a singer like Streisand, who has the pipes. She has a vocal range and clarity of voice that's tuff to beat, even if one does not like her style.

Dion and Carey to me are pretty much just ok.

Terry: I agree, but please don't forget to include Diana Krall & Vannessa Carleton. These gorgeous & sexy ladies are not only a treat visually as well as vocally , but highly acclaimed for their keyboard musicianship.

Nah! I don't believe any of these gals could make it in the days prior to reverb, delay, vocal harmonizers and gangbusters editing. Gotta' agree with Terry, Streisand has a voice that does not require lots of electronics to make her sound good. She has the pipes that other singers dream about, and I'm confident that she is one of those singers that can capture an audience even if she didn't have a mic in her hand.

Just my two cents worth,

Gary

Scott, thanks I was racking my feeble mind trying to come up with Diana Krall and couldn't remember it.

Gary, I believe you're right I doubt "Babs" would even need a mic to capture a crowd. And I absolutely know you're right about the technical helpers that today's singers are getting. If you heard them singing in the shower I'd bet most would say what is that? Someone step on the cat or what?

There wasn't near the technology yesterday there is today. If someone used reverb man that was cool.

I also like women rock singers like Alanis Morrisette, Debbie Harry, Dale Bozio and Annie Lennox just to name a few that instantly come to mind. And come to think of it there are some great synth parts in many of their songs.

You touched here on one of my biggest gripes about most 'artists' today,Gary.
IMHO , there is far too much use of the mic especially with group acts. It's as if the artist(s) are afraid to expose their real voice. I tell you man it's really painful in the true sense of the word when you cannot 'hear' the voice on account of the decibels.
There is a lot of pleasure in hearing artists with great playing and singing skills who do not use mics at all, or at least only when they are playing to a very large audience.
My wife and I often travel on the Ferry from UK to the Continent on boats which have an intimate small stage and dance area for the artists and are unable to enjoy the cabarets because of the decibels.
And believe it or not the artists even suffer the bizarre sight now of these infernal mics which are attached to their faces.
cheers
Eddie Johnson

Diana Krall has it ALL !!! ..... great voice, great styling, great playing ... and you don't mind looking at her either !!!
As for the "pop divas" mentioned above (Dion, Carey, et al) they all sound like they have to hit every note they know in every measure they sing....
Although I did see Dion's Vegas special on tv and was pretty impressed.... Norah Jones is ok, but I thought her cd sounded too much like the same song played over and over ... I was actually surprised she took as many Grammys as she did ... and personally, I DON'T see her as a 'jazz artist' ...
BUT ... back to the original thread .... Where are all the females on this board????

And what about Carool Noonan?
Very different singers, but much energy in their voices. And Lorenna plays some instruments, I think

Guess I must be gettin' old, but I remember Kate Smith singing God Bless America and believe me she didn't need anything other than her incredible voice.

Cheers from an old guy,
