I opend up my Cool Edit Pro today to record something. When I clicked on the view Windows Mizes to set the settings, it was gone. It's not on my taskbar either. Anyone know how to get this reinstalled and why this happened?

Sean,

Right clisk the Taskbar, then click properties/advanced and see what is checked to display. If this is OK, then click OK, and right click the Taskbar again, then click toolbars. Make sure there is a checkmark next to Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,

Gary

Hello Sean
I assume you mean the speaker icon is missing form the lower right of the taskbar.
Click Start, Control Panel, (Settings, and Control Panel if in Classic Mode) and then double click Sounds and Audio Devices, then on the Volume Tab make sure the Place Speaker icon in the Taskbar is checked and click Apply. (If it is already checked then uncheck it, Apply, recheck the box and click Apply again)
If you wish to access the Mixer from the Sounds and Audio Window just click advanced.
Hope this helps

Bill

When I try to click to display it in the control panel in Sounds, it says the volume control program has not been installed. It says to install it from add/remove programs, but I don't know what it is called. I don't know how it got uninstalled. How would I reinstall something like that?

Hi Sean
Are you sure your sound card driver is installed correctly, (Check in device manager) as if not then the Mixer will not be available.
Have you installed any new sound software, as it is possible that this has disabled the Windows Mixer in favour of its own?
Hope this helps

Bill

Hi Sean
Click Start, Run and then type in dxdiag then click OK
In the box that appears click yes
Make sure you have the latest version of Direct X which is 9.0c
Go through the tabs and do all the tests to see if any problems show up, also check to see how many sound devices you have. It is possible that a program has changed your default sound device, to a device that does not support what you are trying to do.
(Windows mixer will choose the default sound device when it is opened)
Hope this helps, and let us know the results

Bill

Hey Sean,

What happens when you click on Start, click on Run, type in "sndvol32" (without the quotes), and click on OK?

The usual path for the Windows sound mixer is C:\Windows\System32\sndvol32.exe.

sndvol32

It says it can't find it. I think when I upgraded Windows Media Player, it must have uninstalled it. Perhaps I can get it from my Windows installation CD.

Hi Sean
Are you using XP or an earlier (Me. 98) system, if it is XP then windows mixer is part of the OS and cannot be uninstalled, only modified by other programs, (The other programs disable or overwrite it in favour of there own) if you are using the earlier OS then it can be installed by going to the Add/Remove programs/Windows components/Multimedia.
If you think Media player is the problem then download the latest version from Microsoft and install this. (It is possible the update corrupted some files)
Another thing you can try is to run Scandisk (Choose to Automatically fix errors) and see if this solves the problem.
Hope this helps
