DNJ, while I hate recommending keyboards with built in sounds for use as controllers nonetheless they may be worth a look for your purposes. For example some of the lower cost Roland boards have enough midi implementation along with good key beds. You can always check to see if you can access the instruments within MidJay from these Roland keyboards. Some of these keyboards are very small in size and weight.

I still feel if you make your system appear "minimalist" to customers you will have a whole lot of fun explaining where all the bueatiful noises are coming from. They will think you have something hidden away somewhere in the pantry!!!
