Me, TOO! Last time I saw Jimmy Smith, I was working the WNOP Jazz Festival out of Cincinnati. Jimmy Smith and James Moody were just hours off the plane from a tour in Japan.
Jimmy, of course, was sitting at the B-3. James was standing with his horn. They were exactly the same height!
That's the first time I heard Jimmy in a full back-up/support role. While he was so famous for that walking left hand, he was WONDERFUL at pedal bass and gorgeous inverted chords. I still remember it...."There I go...there I go...there I go...
Moody was a fabulous singer, in addition to being "da man" on tenor.
A great memory!
Thanks so much for the chance to reflect on one of the most enjoyable music experiences I've ever had.
