Tony, in the early 70's, a fellow from Lexington named Pat Horine joined the Kingston Trio. They were playing a local venue one week-end, and the two guys from out-of-town stayed at a hotel my partner Tom Johnston and I were playing. The taller guy (can't remember his name) was very complimentary of the music. He told Tommy that he really liked our music. "Oh Yea, well I can't stand the crap you're playing", my buddy said. The guy was shock. Then Tom said, "It's just not truthful. For instance, that song about the girl and the guy on the mountain (Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley). He didn't want to hurt that chick (Tommy was an old beatnick). All he wanted to do was CUT her a few times (old beat slang for you can guess what).
See, I have limited folk exposure already. And now you can see where I learned to be such a "crusty" old F***!
Now, let's go shopping for those big puffy sleeved stripped shirts, chenos and white sneakers.
Man, we're "happenin"
