The other thing you could use is 1" PVC pipe ( or smaller) heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer and squash it flat onto the bars.
It will then slip over the ends of the top bars to extend them by whatever length you want - say 1" to 2" and cut to length.
Spray them black and use self tapers to fasten them on.
