There are so many ways to make the sound of the instruments interesting.

1-Using a trumpet as an example: If you are using two trumpets, detune one slightly. Now the two trumpets sound like four, possibly more.

2-Honky Tonk Band: One of the reason the bands from the 20’s had a sound that you could not miss is because they were out of tune. After detuning all the instruments on my Technics I had a Honky Tonk band from the 20s.
I find that when I am doing this kinds stuff, I am having more fun with my keyboard.
If you are entertaining at a NH, a sing-a-long of old, oldies, played with a Honky Tonk band has to be very effective.
