I have been considering replacing my S970, but have tones of registrations already in place. I don't yet know if I will upgrade.

Bernie IMO its always better to start from scratch with a new keyboard so you get all the latest features in sound and style etc, it's more fun and you will be surprised what new ideas you can come up with doing it this way......if you A/B the styles Old vs New you will hear different nuances, & parts here and there that are different from the same style.
Yes it takes a bit of time to recreate but after the homework is done you will be better off in the long run and then you can add those certain styles not offered in the original factory library for that unique song, etc,..Regarding the OOTB sound On the Sx900 you will definitely have to dig in to the EQ/Compression and adjust the sound to your liking,..... it absolutely makes a BIG difference
in the overall sound.
