I have learned more playing with James Burton that I could have picked up in 10,000 lessons. Used to keep a guitar in the back room that nobody played but him when he would drop by, which was pretty often back in the 90's.
It would be hard to find better pickers than are in this video, James, Brent Mason, Seymour Duncan and a young man name Sol Philcox, who is probably 50 years younger than James.
I've told this story before, but one night in my club, a slow Monday, James came in and played with me for nearly three hours. About 11:00 he said he had to leave and of course I thanked him profusely and offered to polish his shoes and buy him a drink.
Anyway, one couple from Dallas had sat there the entire time listening and dancing some.
After James left, I went over to their table to thank them for coming and the man asked "Who in the world was that fantastic guitar player?"
I told them it as James Burton, and the guy looked at me and said, "No seriously, James Burton wouldn't be in a place like this; who was it?"
I have hours of tape of those sessions and I treasure them. I need to dig them out and convert them to modern media.
