A problem with maximum SPL is also that it only refers to one very specific frequency, in which the maximum is reached. You could have speaker A with very thin bass response and little body and speaker B with massive bass and a full sound, and still speaker A could reach a higher maximum SPL in measurements if there are some shrill high frequencies.
