Good news - you seem to be well protected now. Another thought about transferring data between your Laptop and Desktop PC - you say you are using a CD to do this. There is a quicker and better process (short of networking your two computers)
You can use a 'Flash Memory' device which plugs into your USB ports. These devices are known by several names - Thumb Drives, USB Flash Drive, Key Drive etc. and to your computers, they just look like an additional Disk Drive. Since your operating system is Windows XP, you do not need any further software or drivers to use these devices.
They are quite inexpensive and are currently available with capacities ranging from 128Mbyte to 4 Gbyte and are a really good investment for transferring data and temporary storage. You will find a selection of these devices here :
