Dave in live music in the French Quarters it's not strange to see a tenor in a dixieland band. I worked on Bourbon Street at the Blue Angel and around the corner on Royal Street at the House Of Zin, and did some Dixieland with an exception trombone player and an Al Hirt copy cat trumpet player. The crowd liked it fine. Pete Fountain can't play with every band in the quarter's ha ha and in later years there were way more tenor players than clarinet players and I think that caused a transition. However like you I prefer the clarinet, there just aren't a bunch of them running around anymore.
