According to my late uncle, my grandmother (his mudder) actually had a loaded shotgun under the bed after old Pa died.

She was a little bitty thing, and the recoil would've hurt her nearly as much as whoever she managed to hit with buckshot.

They eventually managed to unload it before she accidentally shot herself or one of the kids.
